I think he may have been viewing a cached copy of that page; APUS does show as accredited on the NCA page and APUS has several items about it on their home page, along with a FAQ.

    Here you go

    Here's your official letter:

    Dear Mark,

I am pleased to share the news that American Public University System has earned regional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). Each member of the APUS community—from faculty and staff to students and alumni—is to be congratulated for commitment to self-assessment and continuous improvement.

    What accreditation means

According to the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), accreditation is intended to assure quality and continuous improvement in higher education. By committing to the inherent concepts of self-evaluation and peer review, institutions seeking to attain and maintain accreditation strive to continuously strengthen their academic programs and overall effectiveness.

Accreditation at the national and regional levels means APUS is evaluated on and meets the rigorous quality standards of two independent higher education accreditors. Accreditation also offers broader acceptance of courses and degrees for transfers and admissions to other schools. NCA oversees accreditation for 19 states and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

APUS has been nationally accredited since 1995 by the Distance Education and Training Council. With this announcement, we are now among the few institutions that are both regionally and nationally accredited by federally recognized accrediting agencies.

Today, APUS provides 100% online degree and certificate programs to more than 15,000 students studying from 130 countries. On May 20, we recognized the academic accomplishments of nearly 900 new graduates with a commencement ceremony at Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA. This is an exciting time, and we look forward to embracing the many opportunities that lie ahead.

    Sincerely,

    Wallace E. Boston, Jr.
    President and CEO

I am a police officer in south florida. I work for a large metro department. I have 11 years of experience, 7 of which is in narcotic investigations.

Can someone tell me how they like the AMI MS in criminal justice.
I am looking to advance my career in the police department, and would liek to hear first hand from someone in the degree program. What are the pro's and con's. What is the format of the classes? Is it forum based?

My other goal is to quit LE and transition into the field of corporate security. It seems this degree has many classes in this field. I am just looking for a review of the overall program.

How about the professors ? Does their experience match the classes they are teaching?

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Hey mjc:

AMU is a cool school; I’m in their MA History program. The classes are well thought out and rigorous, the interactions include mandatory discussion boards and a good level of dialog. The professors seem very knowledgeable and attentive.

With the recent RA status, and their broad and unique range of interesting curriculum, and the 15,000 active student base (many from / in the military), this is a great choice.

So before this accreditation, people here were paying $250 per credit hour for an NA degree? Wow.

I know -- that's 3/4 as much as what I'm paying at GW. But still, AMU didn't build a following by accident. They targeted a large underserved population and offered them quality programs that their peers respected. In that scenario, DETC seems like less of a drawback. Besides, I'd guess that AMU gets most of its revenue from Uncle Sam rather than from its students.

Sorry about that. College for Professional Studies, which is DETC through 2007, was purchased by Kaplan College (now Kaplan University), in 2003. So, technically, CPS grads of 2003 through 2007 are DETC/NA. I had (apparently mistakenly) assumed that Kaplan acquired DETC accreditation by merging with CPS. Of course assume ---> A$$ of U + ME.

The USD250.00 per credit hour includes textbooks for undergraduate students. Not a bad deal considering many textbooks are expensive.

I started the Masters in Criminal Justice over a year ago. Looking at several programs. Columbia Southern University in particular which was about $225 per credit hour. In my opinion the learning format is unmatched by other NA schools. The fact the AMU was a candidate with NCA with the strong possibility of becoming accredited and with just 4 classes to go, I felt and still fill it was well worth the extra money.

APUS is the American Public University System. It "is a private higher education community comprised of two online learning institutions: American Public University (APU) and American Military University (AMU)." http://www.apu.apus.edu/index.htm

It is a private, for-profit school.
