Any other teachers out there groaning at the thought of classes starting again?

Don't get me wrong, I love teaching, but it's still hard to get going again after not doing it for 10 weeks.

I have been working my other business and surviving Advanced Statistics, so I have worked my tail off this summer. I've got all that taken care of this week and now I'm saying "Ugggh, the kids are coming next week" Somehow I've managed to get through the entire summer without taking any time off. Why do I do that to myself?

You certainly aren't the only one! Nevertheless, you'll get back into the swing of things soon enough. Never fear!

My kids have already been back in school for two weeks.

Oh yea, thanks. I get back into the swing every year, but I always spend the last week before it starts with a healthy dose of whining anyway. It's a tradition.

Virginia law requires students to start after Labor Day, thanks to heavy lobbying by Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens. Teachers in my division reported back on Wednesday, but thanks to Irene, we're not sure when we'll be going back.

I didn't know what Kings Dominion was but assume that it is similar to Busch Gardens. Either way, that's crazy!

I agree, it's interesting that an organization that produces alcoholic beverages would have influence on schools.

If you're a teacher, that's bad news. If you're not a teacher, it's good news.

Kings Dominion is a theme park in Doswell, Virginia. Back in the 80's the theme parks complained that schools were starting early, and so they were losing their workers. Thus Virginia passed a law that required schools to start after Labor Day so that teenagers could work at the theme parks for the whole summer. The exception to this is that counties out in the western part of the state can start earlier if they usually miss time in the winter for snow.

Teachers do love their profession. But, sometimes there comes a time when momentums are lost and have to be revived. It is just the summer fever. Hehe

I enjoy teaching as those that I am teaching are adults who really appreciate the chance of going to college and are far more willing to learn than the typical college students. Looking forward to the start of the semester :)

Widereader may read widely but certainly not carefully. This thread was started months ago, back in the Summer. It is now December (almost January) and you're citing "summer fever?" Wake up!
