DeSantis may have many questionable characteristics but he's bright enough to know this math as well as anyone. I imagine that he won't announce until he's sure that Trump is going nowhere.

Besides, I kinda think Trump would have a better chance at the General Election than DeSantis.

To be clear, he can win with mere pluralities. The more candidates running, the more likely he'll win. My over/under number is 20.

    Exactly.

This is how we all got saddled with him in the first place, in that the not-Trump contingent was split between Rubio and Cruz until it was too late in 2016 to dislodge him.

Yes...and I don't think I was the only American who thought Ted Cruz was the greater threat to democracy in 2016. I still shudder at the thought. D*mn his evil little Canadian soul!

Right now as appalled as I am by what's happening to free speech in Florida, I don't think DeSantis would have much chance in a general election. If she could get the nomination, Haley might win in November. I can see that happening especially running against President Biden.

While I agree that Haley would probably be more palatable than DeSantis to swing voters generally, elections are usually won or lost on pocketbook issues. To know who would be viable, one would have to know what the economy look like (and feels like) in 21 months.

Besides, after Trump winning in 2016, I've sworn off predictions. I just didn't see that happening.

My wish for GOP primaries is "whatever will make it easier for Biden to get reelected". It can be the Pillow Guy for all I care. The GOP needs to have several losing election cycles to have a chance to be a normal party. That will take at least until the time I will gain a rate to vote against it.

Someone needs to point out that the old "tax and spend" idiom GOPniks use to smear others with is just a summary of Article II of the Constitution. The GOPnik party tries to destroy the Republic by taking away pretty much the only way We The People can have any power.

It would be quite normal if the eventual nominee is someone no one is talking about right now. Or Trump.

I've never voted for a Republican, and since I'm arguing with you elsewhere I'll take the opportunity to agree with you here: it's hard to imagine what would ever requalify them even for consideration.

That's true. It would be interesting to back to previous cycles and track when the eventual nominees were first taken seriously.
