There are rumors that Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee might run for the White House in 08 on the GOP ticket. He's quiet popular in Arkansas, he's a solid conservative, and he's a former baptist minister. His term expires in 06' and he cannot run again.

For every Republican politician you name who holds any or all of these views, I can name a Democratic one who also holds any or all of these views, Carl.

Also, the following Republicans do not fit your characterization:
Lindsay Graham, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Norman Coleman, and a whole list of others in the senate, house, statehouses, and city halls across America.

Most people do at least minimal research before posting.

And he's now a major health nut (meant in kindness) since losing about 100 lbs.

This sounds like Howard Dean's description of the Republican Party which is just not so.

Howard Dean was the frontrunner for nearly two years and many pundits already him being the nominee before the Iowa caucus.

Someone once told me that in primary elections you have to appeal to the more extreme members of your party since that's who votes in primary elections. Then, once you're nominated you have to make a rush to the center in order to try to capture as many of the moderate voters of the opposition party as possible, plus all those "undecides." I don't know if that's true or not but it made some sense at the time. I guess you'd have to really study the poll data in order to be certain.

This is somewhat true nowadays. It wasn't always true. Goldwater ran as an extremist in the primaries and in the general election. McGovern ran as an extremist in the primaries and in the general election.

Jimmy Carter ran as a moderate in the primaries and as a moderate in the general election and so on and so on.

Somewhere I read or heard that Christine Todd Whitman is considering a run for President or Senate.
I think she would apeal to moderates of both parties plus independents.

She is indeed a very sharp, charming, and charismatic person who was a very good governor.

I haven't heard anything about a run for any office. I'd be surprised if she ran for the Senate as Tom Kean, Jr., son of a very popular former Governor and a moderate GOP'er, is running.

And who is Christine Todd Whitman?

Former Governor of New Jersey and former Bush EPA Director.

In 1990 she nearly knocked off Senator Bill Bradley (50%-47%) in his reelection bid.

At the time she was President of the Public Utilities Board!

She's a real figher! She would stand a chance at becoming the 2008 Presidential nominee.

I do not think the Conservatives in the GOP would give Christie Todd-Whitman a chance. She is everything that the Neo-Cons have been trying to eliminate in the Republician Party for the last 8 years! I have a feeling she would be as well recieved as Linc Chaffee in a run for president.

    John McCain versus Hillary Clinton

I suppose the right could get behind a candidate to knock McCain out but right now I think they will be too splintered.

I agree with Brian. McCain v. Clinton
    Result?
McCain wins following an especially nasty campaign.

Unfortunately McCain will not survive a Republican primary. To win the Rep nomination the conservative wing has to at least like you. They hate Big John. The NRA hates him as well. And he did defy the party to lead the Gang of 14 and preserve the filibuster of judicial nominees. Not bad things, but things that alienate him from the right wing of his party. It's a shame too, Mr. McCain is my favorite politician.

Oh Jack, we always seem to disagree more than we agree, ha!

the GOP will split and Clinton will win. The GOP hard right will unite behind a whomever the Constitution Party nominates.

On the Right, I'm a lover of McCain, Romney, Giulliani, and perhaps Pataki. Whether any of these individuals will be able to win the nomination is debatable.

On the Left, I'm pretty sure that the 2008 primaries may be a coronation for Hilary, however, I would love to see Lieberman.

Now, as some of you may know, I have developed a soft spot for Gore. I didn't vote for him in 2000, because I didn't feel like he had any personality. Looking back, I was still young minded, and wished that I'd listened more and made a more educated decision (I'm not saying I would vote for him, but I wished I'd done more research to pick a candidate!).

I saw Gore speak a couple of month ago at John Hopkins University. He was personable, funny, and inspiring as a speaker. I was blown away by his demeanor. The man had a personality, and had that aura of leadership that he lacked in 2000. All I could think of was, "where did this guy come from?"

So, in my own odd way, I'd like to see Gore try a Nixonian-esque attempt at a return run, but I don't see it. He said that he's about 99% sure that he won't be a candidate again. Also, the thought of another loss like the one he had in 2000 may crush him inside psychologically, and his family must remind him of that.

I have a feeling having been closely associated with Bill Clinton for eight years is about as Nixonesque as Gore want to get!
