Okay, so I have a Masters in Education and soon a Masters in Criminal Justice. I want to be able to teach online a lot. I am looking at completing 18 units in English and or Math so I am eligible to teach more. Should I finish just the 18 units or should I finish an entire degree? If I just finish the units won't others be hired before me because of better qualifications, the masters will open more doors. Plus I'm looking at National University, for English I'll only need to complete 4 more classes to finish the masters after I have the 18 units. Maybe I'm wrong, let me know. Is 18 units enough or do I need the degree?

    Thanks

Go for the complete master's degree ... or even the doctorate. You are theoretically qualified with 18 hours, but that is merely the minimum; you will, however, be in competition with others who have master's and doctoral degreees ... with experience.

Tha'ts what I was thinking. I think I'll do the MA in English and then a PhD in Public safety from Capella. I'm not 100% sure yet on Capella but I haven't found anything I like better. I'm a special ed teacher so DBA isn't any use to me.

I would go for the PhD then the 18 credits. I have a grad certificate in healthcare risk management (9 credits) plus 6 other healthcare credits. I plan to take another class for the 18 and end it there. I would not go for a degree unless it was WMNU where you can get a masters with two 18 credit concentrations.

Have you looked into graduate certificate like the ones at AMU? You can get the 18 credits, less cost then a masters degree, faster then another masters, and put something related on a resume. Just a different view.

In your position I'd go for the degree.
    Good luck.

    Adam,

I would go for the 18 credits as there is no point to collect more degrees in my opinion. I understand that you would want to diversify yourself to teach more classes but bear in mind that your resume also has to have some focus. Most teachers have two or at the most three areas of concentration in related fields. You are going to have a hard time convincing a school that you can handle Math, English, Education and CJ just based on paper qualifications. I have two Master's degrees and a Doctorate, in theory I can be qualified to teach Math and Statistics based on my credits but nobody is going to hire me for this as my resume is heavily concentrated in business and IT.

I think it would be better to expand your credits in CJ and Education, perhaps some credits in Education Technology or Education Administration. It would be a lot easier to sell a resume with more specializations in Education or CJ rather than start collecting degrees in unrelated areas like English and Math
