University of Phoenix is a Joke. I took a course there, everyone got a grade of A. The coursework consisted of posted a question on board, doing responses, open book quizzes, and reading a book, then do a report on it. Almost everyone did their one page reports on books they already read or rewrote a summary they found online. The instructor was also very unresponsive.

The so-called 40 hour course took me 10 hours total. That adds up to a day, folks. Do one year of college in 10 days!

Besides, there are people that have a relative that take the course for them! No one knows who is really taking the course, it is anonymous. Just make sure you give them that credit card number!

For those who do not have 10 hours to take a course there are companies in China that will take the course for you. They require your user name, password, and of course a credit card number.

So, let me get this straight. An entire university is a joke based upon one easy class that they offer much like most other schools and one less than motivated instructor out of hundreds. Is that right?

During my undergrad, I could not get one of my required classes offered at night, so I pleaded to get National Unviersity's class and transfer it in. When I took it, the exact situation occurred. Instructor was not responsive, ever - by the end of the term, we all received As, with their apology. We never actually did any work. I don't think this is typical, but happens.

This sort of nonsense gets so old. Research shows that more students on campus are more likely to cheat than those who are online. And it's unsurprising -- most working adults don't want to pay all that money and learn nothing from it.

As for Phoenix, I'm not a fan, as I think they're way overpriced and I don't like their emphasis on group work. But one of the moderators here is an instructor for them and describes a very different situation there than you do when it comes to their overall rigor and academic quality. Frankly, I'll take his word for it over yours.

It certainly is not fair to judge a university based on the one experience of one student on one course. Granted. However, simple Google searches on terms such as "university of phoenix scam" and "university of phoenix easy" or "university of phoenix rip off" or "university of phoenix grades" will indicate that there is something going on. There are many, many searches for these terms. Very unscientific, granted, but HR departments are no oblivious to these things.

This threads reminds me of this one.

  7. You need to post on the degree review sites where all the other disgruntled students go. This is not a place for nonsense ranting. Here is a good place for you http://www.rateitall.com/i-28326-university-of-phoenix-online.aspx

We have all had a few easy classes, I had some at the high-priced B&M where I got my BA, but that did not make it a bad school. I don't particularly care for UOP either, but just because you didn't like a class it offered, it is certainly not a "joke".

One of my best friends teaches at UOP. His report is much different than yours. He is a well-respected PhD and he supports UOP. My cousin got her master's degree at UOP and she reported that it was just as tough as her B&M experience.

I knew enough to stay away from U of P and instead did research and found that a school near me offered the same thing as U of P at a fraction of the costs.

So, without the aid of all the tools now available to include this board as a resource I was able to figure out a course of action for myself. Here we are with you and it seems that you were unable to look into one of the most important processes a person takes on in their lives. And you are calling the school stupid?

It also reminds me of this post that zanger wrote in August about Walden University:

BTW, I've never taught an online class where everyone passed, let alone "got" an A. If students get As in my classes, they really do earn them.

  12. Looks like you have uncovered a pattern there. Why do some people enjoy trashing others?

I'm not a big fan of Phoenix but I don't think it's a joke either. On the other hand, look at Zanger's posting history. He starts out looking for the cheapest, easiest non-us school in the world and then winds up complaining about how easy it is at Phoenix. If Zanger is truly unsatisfied with Phoenix because it's too easy then I'm sure that we all could provide him with some degree programs that would be both less expensive and more challenging.

One of my relatives attended a CC for two years then enrolled in a well known 9with a top level football team) and very expensive B&M university where he earned a BS degree. He managed to pick classes that were very easy, or that he did not have to attend, or where there was no exams. He makes no excuses for his approach. However he did make some terrific contacts which got him into the successful business he is now runs.

I mention this to point out that students can find easy degrees in lots of universities.

That could be more difficult and take more research then just taking the stupid tests!

  16. Ah yes, the Wally's (from the Dilbert comic) of this world. Working twice as hard to avoid doing real work.

I am not a fan of University of Phoenix neither, nor think that UofP structure is a joke. However, I oppose school gives open book exams. I rather support final grade base more researches more than tests. Of course, if 40% midterm, 60% final; once you bomb any of the test, you end up low grade. I learn more by doing research or case analysis.

Peru is moving away from online tests and more writing.

Which, I'm glad I won't be graduating with people that write at an 8th grade level, but at the same time it really increases the work load.

  19. Well, thank you for sharing your opinions. I have heard mixed reviews on UofP, but I do think that there is a difference between having a bad professor or a bad class and having a bad school.

Having never taken any of their classes, my only gripe with them is that they are way to expensive for me, when there are MANY other well-respected programs that offer courses at a much better price.

There are, however, a lot of people who have positive experiences to share about this college. If you would like a balanced view, you could search for some of their stories on either this very site or any of a number of similar ones.

If it's not the school for you, fine, I hope you find one that fits your needs (and your budget) much better.

Sounds like one heck of a deal; hire someone from China to take one’s courses … What a learning experience! And all one has to furnish are user name, password, and credit card number – WOW what a deal! I wonder if these same Chinese course takers are only available for completing UOP classes. :D
