The Western Institute for Social Research, WISR, has been operating as a degree-granting institution since the mid-1970s. Small, responsible, and approved by the State of California, they were forced by law to pursue recognized accreditation or close. Today, the founder and president of WISR, Dr John Bilorusky, announced their successful accreditation by DEAC.

    WISR Mission Statement:
WISR provides community-involved adults with high-quality, affordable, personalized, learner-centered online graduate education and degrees in a collaborative, multicultural learning community with a commitment to community education and to being a model for improvements in higher education. WISR has an emphasis on action-oriented inquiry that combines theory and practice to achieve community improvement, educational innovation, and social justice.

WISR has operated a state-approved master's program that leads to licensure as a counselor, as well a couple of other degree programs.

As some of you know, I've been a behind-the-scenes supporter of this effort. Even though my contributions were minimal, I had the opportunity to consult with them through this process. (I had initially advised against it, so what do I know?)

I'm very happy that this small, innovative, socially responsible, and not-for-profit school has accomplished this great achievement. They should be very proud of their efforts (it wasn't easy) and the continuing impact their school will have on individuals' lives and society in general.
