Jack of all trades has become somewhat of an insult, but it didn’t begin as one. The phrase was originally used to describe a playwright who was always hanging around the theatres. He would help with the stage, the set and the costumes. He would remember lines and try directing. This so-called jack of all trades was in fact William Shakespeare. The full phrase is “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” It was a compliment. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jodiecook/2021/05/13/why-being-a-jack-of-all-trades-is-essential-for-success/
I recently read a book about the advantage of becoming a generalist. https://www.amazon.com/Range-Generalists-Triumph-Specialized-World/dp/0735214484 “In a wicked world, relying upon experience from a single domain is not only limiting, it can be disastrous.” (David Epstein)
