    Nosborne:

I posted the message about the gown before I had read about your LL.M. dilemma on the other forum.

    Hope I didn't offend.

I'll look in my collection and see if I have UH. I don't think so, but I'll look and get back to you.

In the meantime, you might see if the UH Web site has posted graduation pictures, which I suspect you already have done.

    This is what I had......
Academic Regalia. Academic regalia (the traditional black mortarboard cap and black gown) are required for all graduates. For the First time, the University of Houston has selected Official UH Regalia, we strongly encourage you to purchase your regalia at the UH Bookstore. Masters and Doctoral students must also rent the proper hood and bring it with them. Masters students wear their hoods. Doctoral graduates and candidates will be hooded during the Commencement ceremony. See page 4 for more information.

Go to the end of the page. "Dr. Eagle, etc." make a recommendation to NASA regarding the Shuttle. I'm currently working with NASA's engineers regarding issues related to return-to-flight. I can safely say that this recommendation is not under consideration.

Is that academic regalia? Must be from his degree in interior decoration. Looks like the curtains of a Mississippi plantation owner with bad taste.

BTW, I want a curtain rod when I get my doctorate.

    :D

You don't happen to have a photo of the Union doctoral gown, type 2, lying around do you?

I agree with Rich. I work for NASA and I am sure we are considering this guy's suggestions. Oh my. He sure is a piece of work.

It's right there on Oak Hall's site--special regalia.

I like the UT Austin gown a lot. In fact, I think I'll put it in my top five list.

I must say I expected Bevo to be on the lapels rather than the Tower.

Must have been quite a fight in committee.

Notre Dame may be the most famous Catholic institution but it is due to athletics rather than academics. It is the type of place where factors other than academic potential get one admitted (family ties, athletic considerations, etc.). It also has a reputation as a place where if you pay the tuition and show up for 4 years, they hand you a degree.

Georgetown University, on the other hand, has an excellent reputation and is probably the most rigorous Catholic institution in the U.S. Except for a period in the 1980s where the school allowed the basketball program to get out of control, Georgetown has managed to maintain exceptionally high standards.

My beloved spouse took her J.D. from Georgetown...there are SOME who consider it to be the best all around (as opposed to strictly commerical) law school in the country.

Some of that comes from the close association of G'town with the federal government at very high levels.

Ted H. You are obviously confused. Notre Dame is regularly rated in the top 20 academic programs in the country. It may have exceptional athletics, but it also has exceptional academics.

Now on to the real question, academic regalia. I actually like the regalia that is different or gaudy. it stands out.

It's more palatable than you might think

I must say that the color and design of the school's regalia did not influence my decision to go to UTD. What swayed my choice was UTD's quality for the price, the particular program that I followed, and it's location. The descriptions of the gown posted on here are accurate--it could almost be used in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but it wouldn't really work for a song and dance number. But now that I have earned the right to wear it, it's audacity seems more endearing than off-putting. It's similar to Princeton's except for the half-sleeves and Princeton's has the velvet pulled away from the zipper (I do like that better). If the regalia is one of the primary reasons for you considering a doctoral program, you may want to reconsider your motivation.
