I personally own a blackberry 8100 pearl. Before the discussion board upgrade, browsing and replying to posts on this board was not too easy. Now, it seems this forum software seems to be more "mobile friendly" than the old degreeinfo discussion board. Anybody else look/post on this board on a BB or other smartphone?

    Just curious..

Don't have one, don't want one. I only have a mobile phone at all because Marymount gave me one. It's old and the ringer doesn't work, and I'm thinking about keeping it anyway. :D

I use a Treo 650 and access the web/email all the time but I haven't accessed DI on it.

I had a treo 180 a few years ago. I used to look at posts on it from DI every now and then, but not a lot due to the speed (used CSD connected to my ISP for internet on it).

I've had quite a few smart phones and I think I can safely say that I'll be sticking with this phone for a while (although the 680 looks pretty good) ;)

This is good news. I'd love to say that we planned it that way and slaved feverishly to make it mobile-compatible, but the truth is... I think it is a built-in feature of the current version of VBulletin.

We have discussed the possiblity of further streamlining for handheld devices, and possibly even eventually making podcasts available of things like interesting lectures or discussions on DL topics. Any suggestions are always appreciated!

Chip, an RSS feed (link) to read all the new posts daily would be nice (even for a desktop w/ an RSS reader... makes it easy to see what has been posted).

All of that would be interesting. What do you all have planned anyway? It seems that DI has continued one for a while somewhat neglected, but are you all planning more of a renovation than just a software upgrade? Are you thinking of competing with portals like eLearners.com? Enquiring minds want to know....

That would be a nice idea....although I haven't found many bulletin boards with the ability to "RSS-itize" the forum. I haven't looked very hard for this functionality either though :)

I was trying to create one using feed123.com, but it seems I do not know what the heck I'm doing! ;)

I have made several RSS feeds from news type webpages, but it appears (as your suggesting, Eric) that this board isn't too "RSS-itizable."

If you're talking about blackberry pie, I'm all over that. But as far as the little handheld device goes, I am technologically impaired.

I wish I had a solid answer. Part of it is time and energy... I have been busy with several other projects over the past few months and Nate and Keith have also, but it looks like we'll have a window of time where we can work on upgrades to degreeinfo soon.

Nate and I are planning a discussion later this month on direction. There are a bunch of ideas, it's just a matter of (a) having the staff resources to make them happen, and (b) having the financial resources to make them viable. We believe that we can grow DegreeInfo without going the crass, annoying, "in-your face" commercial route that a lot of other sites have done with annoying flashing banner ads and such... but still providing opportunities for the schools that sponsor degreeinfo and make it a viable business. It's just a matter of providing the resources that our members and participants want and also providing enough means for advertising dollars or other revenues to pay for it all.
