I'm looking at the handbook right now and it says a maximum of 15 semester hours of graduate work completed at another institution may be transferred into the program. I see nothing about a 6 credit transfer limit. With any school, the transfer limit can be different than the number of credits accepted. It's difficult for me to post links on my phone, but you can see the written policy on page 11 of the DPA handbook.

Using masters level coursework from another institution to complete the specialization is transferring credits.

I just looked at the faq. For the question about how many credits can be transferred from another DPA program, the answer is 15.

We are looking at different sections of the handbook. You are looking at "Academic Requirements" on Page 11 which applies to students who are already admitted into the program. This is done so that students already in the program can have some flexibility in designing a specialization that works for him or her.

In that context you are correct, but consider the following:

The VSU Graduate School transfer limit is 6 credits:
    http://www.valdosta.edu/academics/graduate-school/prospective-students-faq.php#a8

Those 15 credits need to over and above the credits the student earned for the Masters degree - there is no double counting.

The description is poorly written, but I can tell you first-hand as a graduate of the DPA program and as someone who is still in contact with faculty and current students - 9 of those 15 credits (9 more than allowed by Graduate Admissions) are intended to be taken AND transferred into the program AFTER the student is admitted into the program. This is done in order to provide flexibility and reduce the strain on PA department for students looking for specialization coursework.

Another DPA program is a different discussion than Masters level coursework since it is credit earned after the award of a Masters degree.

That is just a frequently question. The answer obviously came from the policy for transfer credits. No offense meant to you, but I rarely trust students' words especially if they are in contradiction with official info and the person no longer attends the school. I will contact the school personally when I have time this week.

No offense taken. I was in the exact same situation as the OP. I did provide the link for the graduate school transfer policy - you have to be admitted to the graduate school before you get into the DPA program.

Let me know what you find.

Accepting 15 transfer credits from other DPA programs is already in contradiction to graduate school policy, so I will ask for clarification.

I looks like Arkansas State has an Ed.S. that is $235 a unit and I can use the Ed.S. to transfer to a doctorate program if I desire. This may be a good middle ground for me.

I did an Ed.S. at Liberty University and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I think they will accept a maximum of 15 credits in transfer. They gave me credit for a class that I took at NCU that I probably didn't deserve to get. Probably some grace given there.

Well, on that you'd expect them to have pretty clear expertise.

I called Valdosta. As was said by truckie, you cannot use credits that were used in a previous degree. However, she said the 6 transfer credit limit applies to the MPA but not the DPA. You can transfer up to 15 credits at any point in the program as long as they are at the graduate level (master's or doctoral). Just to be clear, I told her that I was considering transferring 15 doctoral credits from my Criminal Justice PhD program. She said I could do that.

Thanks. I wish that would have been the policy while I was in the program - it would have saved me two semesters.
