Oxymoron or legitimate question? Interested in your feedback. I want an MBA, but, more and more, I want to tackle it in a self-directed format. DETC schools seem to provide the best option.

I don't think any DETC school would necessarily be considered "prestigious," only because none of them are necessarily household names. I can't picture a student getting an acceptance letter from Aspen University and bragging about it to friends and family the way they would if they got an acceptance letter from Harvard or Yale.

That isn't all bad. Being a plumber isn't necessarily a prestigious job, but there are some that make a lot more money than somebody who does have a job that is considered prestigious. DETC schools get the job done, but without all the fanfare and recognition that other schools enjoy.

The most prestigious DETC schools would be Deakin University, which is a well-regarded Australian university, and Western Governors University and Ellis University, both of which are also accredited by their respective regional accrediting bodies.

If you are looking for a self-directed MBA, I know a few people who are going through Northcentral University's graduate program in business, which is self-directed (and regionally accredited). You might want to consider it.

Hm, that's interesting. Why would a foreign university have DETC accreditation?

Somehow there would be real potential in the "Aspen" name if they would market it right...

I don't know for sure about Deakin, but when University of South Queensland received DETC accreditation they announced they had done so to attract American students and to allow their American students to be eligible for financial aid.

I think you should be asking yourself what you plan to do with an MBA and want your long-term goals are. If you go with a school that is DETC accredited, it would limit your choices on what colleges to attend to obtain an MBA. If you plan to attend a college that is DETC accredited, or a regionally accredited school that accepts a DETC undergraduate degree for an MBA that would be fine, but this will dictate what you plan to do with your degree.

Which DETC school is in the top four tiers for colleges and universities? None are. Nay, not one.

Ellis accredited by its RA? I didn't know that. It was, of course, accredited by both the Middle States Association and the Distance Education and Training Council once upon a time when it was Ellis College of the New York Institute of Technology. But I had thought that after the separation Ellis University was nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council but not RA. I'll be happy to concede the point if you were to show me otherwise.

Speaking of RA/NA schools, why did you not mention the American Public University System?

As for NA schools that are RA candidates, what does anybody think of the ACCSCT-accredited Westwood College which is an RA candidate through the North Central Association or the DETC-accredited Global University of the Assemblies of God which is an RA candidate through the North Central Association?

At one time, it had something to do with getting access to U.S. financial aid, but I think that situation has changed now.

What am I looking for? I never know. But for today... I want to gain business acumen, and it would be nice to get a degree in the process. My career will always be in communications (hense my current grad degree). But, I want more business know-how. And, adding to that list, I want more project management know-how (probably get my pmp soon, or go the standford project management route).

Top four tiers? Fourth tier is the lowest tier. However, if you think about it, fourth tier is in the top four tiers. :D

Ellis is indeed one of the schools which are both RA and NA.

The others have already been mentioned: Western Governors University and AMU.

    Hi Ted,

When Ellis moved to Illinois, it became accredited by North Central Association.

Presumably this is a reference to the US News & World Report college and university rankings, which are the most widely recognized such rankings in the US, and which use a four-tier system.

But the scope of the USN&WR rankings is specifically confined to RA schools. DETC-accredited schools are excluded from these rankings by definition.

I don't think that the DETC listing has anything comparable to Rockefeller University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Memorial Sloan Kettering atop the NYRegent's accredited list.

Both DETC and ACICS would like the public to think of them as university as oppposed to trade-school accreditors, but changing perceptions is slow-going without flagship schools that can stand alongside the leading RA schools.

AMU has dual RA & DETC accreditation

American Military University is the most prestigious DETC accredited school. However, it must be noted that American Military University is also regionally accredited.

I believe that this might also be the only school that first became accredited through DETC and then subsequently became RA. In my mind this seems to be an indication that DETC is in fact a step below RA because if it weren't then more DETC schools would go on to RA.
