All of my coursework was done online. I also took several CBEs which required a proctor, but were administered online. I only had one course that required teleconferencing and I did a teleconference for my comprehensive exam. I actually don't like the term non-traditional. I might be a non-traditional student, but my graduate degree is not non-traditional. There are non-traditional colleges that are 100% virtual. Correspondence education has been around since before I was born. Most brick and mortar schools have the same requirements for their online programs and on campus equivalents. I don't know what it is, but non-traditional makes it sound like there is something inherently different about the coursework and curriculum.

I don't mind the term "online degree." I do hate when people say "Internet degree." That term is mostly used by people who can barely operate a computer. Some people might have completed hybrid/blended courses, correspondence courses by mail, or in-person practicums; but a lot of people also earn their degrees completely online. It may be somewhat of an inaccurate term for some, but it's not for many distance learning students.

Online degrees from B&M schools are nothing more than cash cows for the school. It really should be notated on a transcript if you weren't on campus, I mean it's not really the same thing, you know? I'd never consider hiring someone with an online degree. The best is when holders of these "degrees" try to build cases for why the piece of paper is just as legitimate as their counterparts' who attended the on-campus programs. It's sad that people try to misrepresent their online degrees to employers. Everyone knows that "non traditional" and "distance education" are really just terms used to make people who have a complex about their online degree feel better about themselves.

Now Delta, before you go into another belligerent rambling about how your degree is not an "online degree" please note that I only wrote the above to attempt to rile you up. Calm down. Your reaction, in my mind, is akin to when some liberal gets pissed that I say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays". You're creating a hostile situation when none was intended.

Oh, and people don't say "distant learning", they say "distance learning". It's true that online learning is only a subset of distance learning, but that doesn't mean it's an invalid subcategory, especially when it's the largest one by far.

By the way, Penn State World Campus describes itself as "Online Degrees, Online Courses, and Online Certificates offered by Penn State".

Well, I don't evangelize, so unless they ASK ME A QUESTION, I don't say anything.
It's hard enough making time for everything I need to do in a day, I don't have the time or brain space to sell online learning.

You win! Just saying what I've experienced from my online degree and "DL" indication on my transcript. Perhaps its anecdotal evidence. :cool2:

I think it is important to emphasize the need for an online education/online degree/non traditional education/ distance learning program to be accredited and preferably from a reputable institution. For those of you who have not faced the scrutiny then consider yourself fortunate!

I don't think so! You are "personally attacking and harassing" me which is a clear violation of the TOS! I've been banded from posting on degreeinfo for less!

    No, it's funny.

It's always funny when someone else is the center of the joke. Another violation of the TOS? The fact is, I faced that kind of scrutiny and discrimination for an "online degree" in the real world and AUTiger00 knows it, that's why he/she is prodding and poking! How is that funny? How does that promote distance learning?

You are not the center of the joke. You seem to have an absence of any self-awareness coupled with a large over flow of self-absorption (of course it's all about me!) that is making you read way more into this than you should be.

I've been the center of the joke so may times I've lost count. Bounce back, give when you get it, don't just roll over, give up and appeal to authority. Or....you could also not read the thread anymore. I've had to do that from time to time, it's tough but eventually you'll forget all about it.

    Sounds like good advice!

I'm not prodding and poking, I was making a joke. You're overly sensitive. I'd bet dollars to donuts you're a liberal, because no rational person would get this upset over something that was CLEARLY A JOKE. Christ, I even included a paragraph specifying it was A JOKE at the end of the comment. When you're done here maybe you can go search for pictures on facebook to fain outrage over. You'd make an excellent social media activist.

You just can't leave it alone and /or apologize! There you go again, poking and prodding, name calling taking the Lord's name in vain!

Yep. I'm a real jerk. I mean our service men and women are dying in foreign countries, our government can't stop spending money, people are starving, kids are in debt up to their eyeballs to go to college and then can't get jobs and you're biggest problem is that a couple of your colleagues tease you about the format in which you earned your master's degree. Clearly, between the two of us, I'm the asshole here...you're just incredibly self absorbed. And no, I will never apologize to you. You should probably get some thicker skin if anything I said here truly offended you. Tell you what, why don't you sit a couple plays out there, champ. Come talk to me when you have some real problems.

**To the moderators, this comment you could probably categorize as flaming. Suspend me if you have to, but you know this board would be a lot less fun without me here.

THIS IS CLASSIC. A LIBERAL IS FAINING ANGER OVER SOMEONE TAKING THE LORD'S NAME IN VAIN!!!! YOU'VE GOT TO BE F'ING KIDDING ME!?!? Tell you what, tell me the last time you went to Church and how much you tithed and if it was more recently than me and you gave more I'll apologize to you.

I hold no animosity towards anyone on this forum and apologize for upsetting anyone! I've got to go now and take care of my patients lined up out the door who in reality have validated my diploma!

So you've got patients lined up out the door and you're playing on a message board? Clearly you're very good at your job. What do you do, exactly? I envision you as the person who hands out the daily meds to inpatients in a psych ward. Have a great day and good luck with that ONLINE DEGREE!!!
