This is a good point. I think this discussion has carried on so long just because it's Walmart we are talking about. This whole thing will come to nothing, if I could venture a guess.

That's an interesting idea. It would not be unthinkable to find university courses offered at a Boarders Books location, for example. It might not even be an insult to the school making the offer. I would think something like that would only work in a low level, general interest subject; you couldn't assign much academic integrity to a course bought off of a shelf that didn't require any entrance screening. Things like transcripts and entrance exams would be impossible in this setting.

IMO, almost half the people that come seeking education advice have stated or implied an inquiring desire in the "prestige" of the university or the program that they are asking about.
In light of the hundreds of threads regarding the acceptability or hiring advantage of any particular degree by HR personnel or academia, I find the latitude given to some posters' worry or discussion point rather ironic.

Actually, it appears to be merely a public image move for Walmart and not so much an actual attempt to improve the lives of its employees.

Did you realize you are nearing the 1,000 posts mark? (say yes and you will be one post closer... ;) )

Yes, it's surprising. Now I'm under pressure to say something profound for post #1000.

eBay sometimes has EBS courses for sale, along with the paperwork needed to take the exam. I guess some students buy the course, take a look at it, and decide it's a bit too difficult.

Was this EBS courses that were sold? I'm going to guess the chain was Kinokuniya. Indecently, it was their store in Shinjuku where I saw my first copy of the Bear's guide. (However, I didn't buy it. I had already found the AED newsgroup then.)

Yeah, there was a glitch. You'll need to send me money now. Don't you want to be a cool doctor like me?

I bought a few of my EBS courses off eBay. People sold their courses for a lot of reasons. Sickness, time commitment, change of program, etc. My favorite post was from a woman who said she is selling her courses because she is getting married. Her fiancee didn't believe that a woman should have a master's degree.

Of course, I didn't believe her and accused her of chickening out. We had a few few private email exchanges and in the end I she was telling the truth. I wonder if they are still married.

Between eBay, and a few deals from Financial Times, I paid around $7,000 for my MBA. This included taking courses in Edinburgh!

When EBS moved to online course registration, that made selling courses on eBay impossible. However, once in a while an old course pops up with the "green sheets" (the exam registration forms) included.

What I can't believe is that MichaelOliver and I started at degreeinfo at about the same time (I started in October 2009, not March like my profile says). It really feels like I post at least three times as much as he does, but he is ahead of me by far. Amazing. Well, I will start now trying to figure out what I will write for my 1,000th post :)

Actually that's pretty good. October 2010 means you haven't started yet and you already have 781 posts. :) LOL I know you meant 2009.

When you got deleted a few months ago, did Chip restore you post totals?

Yes, I want to be as cool as you! Is it still $10K and I get a lot of credit for life experience? Don't have to take any classes or tests right? It's RA accredited, (Restaurant Association) I'm writing the check now. :)

I'm an AMU student and I have no problems with this. What if Walmart had partnered with some B&M school like LSU or Penn State? Would everyone be saying that those schools are now crap? It's a employee benefit, no more, no less. At a minimum, more people might hear about AMU now.

Yes! We are RA! All of your life experience will be evaluated after we receive the payment. Unfortunately, the government is behind the times, so you won't be able to get financial aid. But most of our doctors find that a home equity loan is a quick and affordable way to make their doctoral dreams come true!

Sarcasm, my favorite kind of humor. :) And in the event that anyone wonders, Michael and I are playing.....oh wait, unless you really want to send me money! Then, by all means!

I have already sent the check. Unfortunately, the check will bounce. I wouldn't worry too much about people taking a PhD in Microwave Cheffery too seriously. :)

Ok, I am putting joking aside for just a second (although this will certainly sound like a joke), but Microwave Cheffery sounds A LOT more practical than a lot of the degrees that have been contrived within the past decade.

Yes to both. Since, as you well know, the only requirement is passing the exams, so it really doesn't matter where the course came from. And since anyone can take the exams, but one doesn't enroll until after passing atleast two, there is no screening necessary.

And just discovered yesterday, on going to a huge Japanese supermarket here in the Portland (Oregon) area that there is, adjoining, a very large Kinokuniya Bookstore. Toys and gadgets and electronics, too. And more Mac-oriented computer magazines than I've ever seen in one place, all of them with at least one free CD bound in.
