I don't really see an argument against spending the money this way unless one is entirely opposed to collegiate sports. They're not my cup of tea, but I recognize a lot of people derive happiness out of them. So be it.

Not my cup of tea either. So if I give money to a college or university I'm likely to designate it to something that is my cup of tea. If I don't then I can't really complain if they spend it on something I wasn't a fan of during the course of my life.

There are also schools that have dominant sports programs. I could see people feeling, if this school were in that category, that maybe Athletics kind of just muscled in and took the cash away from languishing libraries and liberal arts. But there are other schools that have athletics programs that are simply unexceptional. I think that's a different ballgame (pun intended) entirely.

There is a difference between giving $100 to the athletics program at Penn State and $100 to the athletics program at Cornell.

After what happened there, I wouldn't give Penn State athletics the time of day, much less $100. But I take your point generally.

I just noticed, that was discussed earlier. Professors don't make very much money at all, compared to football coaches. Still, I'm guessing for the $1 million spent on the score board, seven professors - or maybe as high as ten, for about a year - or one, for up to 7-10 years.

Or you could leave the scoreboard alone and hire as many as 30, 40 or even more professors for the yearly salary (5 million+) of one high-end athletics coach!

If 1-million buys a scoreboard or 1 tenure Professor.....I will take the scoreboard.
