Dustin, what did they end up assigning you to teach?

 

It looks like my specific teaching assignment will be available to me closer to the start of term, perhaps 48 hours or less.

On the list of courses I'm eligible to teach are a variety of first and second year business courses, basic stats and intro to accounting.

I actually didn't include references in my CV (despite the note to include them) and they never followed up for them so I didn't worry about it.

 

I have sent six emails and not received a single response. My lack of interest in UoPeople is now equal to their apparent lack of interest in me. Incredibly unprofessional of them though, I have to say.

One could be for teaching positions. Another could be for more admin or managerial-related roles.

How did teaching your first class go?

 

I grow very concerned Dustin is still very active on the forum as a whole but has not responded in here. I fear that means it did not go well.

 

Sorry! I forgot to answer. It did not go well. But that may have been as much on me as them.

Students work through the material in a very structured way. There are assignments due on a weekly basis, in addition to a journaling exercise. Assignments are due on Wednesday's. There is a 2 day turnaround for grading.

There is a plagiarism checker that you sign up with and can run assignments through. It doesn't catch "spun" content (where a tool has changed out the wording to appear new), but there are other tools that do. I could tell when content was spun because the wording would be really unusual in standard terms, for example "sample population" would become "example residents" Lots of Googling of submissions to find out they copied from a textbook or Wikipedia.

Needing to meet such a short turnaround is challenging, especially when the content is primarily narrative (writing and statistics homework.) I'm used to students having all term to do assignments and therefore me having all term to grade them, outside of specific assignments that require manual grading like plots or code.

The amount of plagiarism and spun content was concerning. No assignment in the course was free of it. Lots of students asking for extensions. Officially, there are none at UofP but this is left up to the instructor's judgement. Some students had really challenging situations: one extension I did grant was for a student whose country was in civil war and they worried the power would be shut off by Wednesday.

I think if I were used to teaching in a synchronous environment with international students it would have been a better experience for both me and the students.

When they say 10-15 hours a week for the course I think that's reasonable. A lot of it is manual, very different from my experience at Eastern where we have automated much of the assessment and focus our time on student questions about mastering the material, not pasting discussion posts into forums and providing feedback on them (there's only so many ways you can respond to a student sharing that measures of central tendency were something they learned in their last course.)

So, there we have it. I do think UofP wants professors to succeed. They have lots of automated and manual notification systems in place to make sure professors are keeping up with grading and things like that, but it was such a different environment from Eastern that it wasn't a good fit.

That's right. They ask you at the beginning of your instructor time with them to choose availability for the next two terms. They recommend you select 1 course for the first term and then 0 for the second term. Then, during the first term they will unlock your access to set availability for the next 5 terms (including the one you already gave plus 4 more.) You can update the availability you already gave, and select 0, 1 or 2 courses.

I wisely stated 1 course this term and 0 in the next and have no further obligation.
