Glasgow has centuries of on-campus accomplishment and it rmains a high-powered research university today. But does that really mean that Glasgow's DL programs are academically superior, or does it only mean that those DL programs are free-riders on reputation that they had little or nothing to do with earning?

Keep in mind that elite doctoral programs typically admit less than 10% of their applicants, provide all of them with financial support and then involve them "total-immersion"-style in full-time on-campus collaborative research work.

If Glasgow has both the selectivity and the intellectual intensity that would justify a "top" rating, then it probably isn't a viable option for most of us here on Degreeinfo. The kind of compromises that lead one to pursue DL are precisely the kind of compromises that make graduate programs drop in the rankings: Open admissions, part-time enrollment, non-traditional ages and backgrounds, weaker academic supervision, less interaction with professors and with other students, "lone ranger" dissertations and so on.
