Summer Puzzler. Perhaps an intriguing one.

    Re: Well done!

    Adireynolds-

I can't speak for certain, but I imagine it's due to its remote location and proximity to the Nevada border. I've never been to this school, but I spent several years living in the area (Twentynine Palms, Ca.) and there are some VERY remote areas out there in the desert. This is the same area that Charles Manson and his "family" hid out in when he was wanted for the Tate/Labianca murders. In many areas of the desert, it's actually easier to drive into Nevada than it is to drive into the rest of California.

As for Fed Ex delivering to the school, Fed Ex doesn't deliver to the post office, but to the actual location.

    DAMN! :)

I NEVER try to solve these, but I thought I had an angle with the Native American and APO/FPO angles. But I suspected it was a border thing, which is why I looked at Native American schools. But I gave up because I didn't know how to look for schools on state borders.

(All of this assumes Ryan is right. If not, and this continues, this post will have to do for my eventual outrage/disappointment! :D )

Ryan is indeed right. Well done. (Did you know this, or somehow research it? Send me an email, saying which book you want, and where to send it. [email protected])

Deep Springs is very far out in the desert, at least a one-hour drive from the nearest house in California . . . but it's only three miles from the tiny remote town of Dyer, Nevada, which does have a post office. Long ago, the deal was made in which the Postal Service apparently said, "We'd really rather not send a letter carrier on a 3-hour round-trip drive for one customer; would you consider getting your mail via Dyer, Nevada?", and so it is done (and has been for at least 60 years).

I hung out there one summer,* when in college, and was awfully impressed. They get faculty who are on sabbatical elsewhere -- that summer they had the head of the geology department at Stanford, a justice of the Wisconsin supreme court, people like that. At that time, about 90% of the graduates (with an AA) were going on to Cornell, but things clearly have grown more eclectic since then.

    Dr. Bear-
I've sent you an email with my mailing address. Thank you very much for the book; I will consider it an outstanding addition to my library.

I actually read about Deep Springs here at Degree Info a while ago. On one thread or another someone mentioned it and it sounded interesting so I flipped through the school's website. Don't ask me how I remembered that, but when I read the question, Deep Springs College popped into my mind.

(I can't remember the names of my wife’s friends, but I can remember that I read about Deep Springs College on Degree Info!)

    Ryan,

I gotta ask. Did we rename a city in Iraq or maybe a hurricane shifted the Carolinas? :D Be safe if Iraq is your current location and thanks for taking up our slack.

    Kevin-
    I guess I could make that a little clearer, couldn't I? :D

My heart is in Eastern North Carolina with my wife and kids. My physical body is in Iraq doing what Marines do. Thanks for your safe wishes. I have a fine group of hard-working Marines with me and we're doing our best to take care of each other.

    Taking ideas from Sailors?

    Just kidding.

Good luck and keep your ass down.

    Ryan,

I did 4 years as a Recon Team leader in the mid 70s (did dive school at Coronado so it wasn't all bad). Doing what Marines do....

also spent 21 in the Guard (some as a ROMAD/FO)and managed to make it to your current part of the world several times. Retired before this last go round though.

When all is said and done you are in good hands. Safe return.

    Dr, Bear-
I just wanted to let you know I received your book. Thanks again.

I'd like to start reading it tonight, but I received my final exam for my American Revolution class through LSU, so I really should study. Maybe I can divide my time equally between the two. :D

John: Oh, good. Now I can rent a U-Haul to take the paperwork to the dump. Sending a parcel to a soldier in Iraq involved only a little less paperwork than refinancing our mortgage.

Shoulda' sent it to his wife and kids in Eastern North Carolina. It would have given him just one more reason to be careful and get his butt home safely. ;)
