The Southern Christian University website states that their Ph.D. in Family Therapy program is on hold until further notice, and no applications are being accepted.

Overwhelming popularity? Unpopularity? Problem with SACS?

There appears to have been some problem with the acrostic: SCUPS

Southern Christian University Ph.D. Studies (SCUPS)

seems to have been mistaken for

Southern California University for Professional Studies (SCUPS) .

I believe the problem(s) are now corrected as SCU is accepting applications for the program according to its web-site.

I started out at SCU and for the most part I enjoyed it. There are some very nice people at that school. However they do their classes in real time so you can view it at a later time but you do have to sit there and watch the whole 2 hour class. I find it is hard to find time for doing this. I prefer the UOP format b/c I don't have to watch the class on real audio. At first I liked the idea of listening to a real audio class but after awhile it is very mind numbing and hard to focus.

Hi Holly: When I was in seminary I had the same situation with audio tapes from time to time. It is pretty stupefying. Here is what I did: I would turn the tapes on and also turn on cartoons on the TV with the sound off. Sort of the Charles Ives approach to multimedia learning. To this day there are certain theologians and their adversaries whom I envision as weasels in cowboy hats or macrocephalic canaries, chasing each other with dynamite.

My preference for an online program was also not to watch video or listen to audio or regular classes. I would like for them to find lectures given by the giants in the field and to put those online, but I don't think that I'm missing much by not having the regular class lectures.

I'm a reasonably good independent learner, though. It would be different if I was the sort of learner who needs the classroom lecture/interaction. In my writing, one of the things that I regularly mention is that in any type of distance learning, you had better be able to learn independently (and be able to stick with it) or you will never finish the program.
