Is the Southern California University of Professional Studies (SCUPS) accredited by the State of California or is it a degree mill?

I have seen past threads on SCUPS, but skipped over them. Now I'm interested in knowing about it (but not for the purpose of enrolling).

The State of California doesn't accredit schools. SCUPS and other private post secondary institutions that are not RA or DETC accredited are approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education, (BPPVE) an agency of the Dept. of Consumer Affairs. Hope this helps.

Is it accredited by that body e.g. is it a legit school?

BPPVE is not a recognized accreditor. It is supposed to review programs to ensure their standards are similar to accredited programs.

SCUPS is far from a degree mill and recently dropped its doctoral programs in an attempt at accreditaion. I am not sure what accreditation that is.

SCUPS is a school that shares a lot of similarities with California Coast University, being one of the higher profile California approved schools.

Mr. Again. You've posted more than a thousand times on this board. It would seem apparent that you've read discussions about the validity of California Approval--it is a topic on which there are several viewpoints. I'm certain a simple search would reveal far more on this subject for your perusal than merely revisiting the question in this thread.

    Hope this helps!

No. The State can't/doesn't accredit schools. The BPPVE is not an accrediting body. It's main purposes are to regulate private post secondary schools and to offer consumer protection.

Yes, I believe SCUPS, CCU and others that fall under the BPPVE are legal and legitimate schools.
However, it is debatable as to the utility of the degrees from these schools. It is said that these degrees are more accepted in businesses, with little or no acceptance in academia.

Also remeber the SCUPS - Northcentral tie! Northcentral being a spin off of SCUPS, set in another jurisdiction for a better chance at accredidation, and it worked.

Whew, if that's your conclusion, then you'd make a lousy investigator. ;)

I skipped over all those threads because I had no interest in them -- until now.

Actually, the creation of this new thread has turned out to be extremely informative. I'm glad that I created it and I hope you'll share in my joy. :)

While this is old news to you -- it is new news to many others, to include myself. :)

Interesting thing about SCUPS; they have ended their psychology PhD program even though Oregon's ODA actually approved it!

They've also abandoned their LL.M. in taxation. I wonder why? It isn't because DETC won't accredit advanced law degree programs; DETC accredits Taft, who offers a tax LL.M.

I also wonder why they abandoned their Psy.D. program. The Psy.D. is a professional degree; I wonder if DETC was unwilling to accredit it anyway?

Facinating. They couldn't get RA status from one regional accrditation body (WASC), so they moved to another jurisdiction and were granted RA status by another regional accreditor (NCA).

    Food for thought:
