Thanks for that (both the fun anecdote and the general advice).

I had been thinking about conferences but I hadn't put much emphasis on it, but considering your comments I am going to explore this much more seriously. I'm lucky in that my school is possibly willing to give a little money towards travel to conferences (although one might have to be a presenter, which is a different kettle of fish) so that at least helps out a bit (maybe).

Hargeisa is actually in Somaliland, an area which declared independence from the rest of Somalia seventeen years ago and has a much more stable environment than places like Mogadishu. It's not the only university there, there's also Amoud University, although I don't think they do DL.

It's a de facto republic not really recognized by anybody, but it's in the same geographic area.

On a side note, I once made a trip to nearby Djibouti when I was in the Navy. We were delivering supplies to a U.S. embassy. When I say "supplies", I mean things like toilet paper and potato chips. This is a poor country.

We had to take anti-malaria medication for 9 weeks before we we got to Djibouti, and for another 9 weeks after we left, and we were only in Djibouti for 8 hours. My ship took on fresh water when we were in port, but it was so contaminated it had to be chlorinated for three days before we could drink it. The water coming out of the drinking fountain tasted like it came out of a swimming pool. The soda machine on the mess deck got a lot of use that week!

By the way, Somaliland was featured in a UK TV show called "Places that Don't Exist". They even visit Hargeisa.

    Back to business...

    Hi all,

Since this thread has moved a little away from its original point, which is, who are the South African DL and DL/research engaged people on this forum. Brad suggested that SA DL could have a forum section, as it is a worthy topic that generates interest for people who might want to do RSA degrees and programs.

    What do you think, people?

Love the idea, I'm going to be doing my doctoral level program through Africa or the UK. Having a place to discuss issues with others in a more concentrated fashion would be of great value to me personally.

I agree - go to a conference! I went to a conference to present a paper and was able to find my outside reader for my dissertation. In addition, I was able to make many contacts, who have assisted me in small but important ways along the way.

By the way, I emailed the University of Hargeisa about their distance learning offerings about a week ago. I still have not received a reply.

I have heard that this is not unusual when dealing with African universities, so that is another consideration if you are looking at going the DL route with a South African school.
