Well then hopefully they won't have to ever face HR dept that doesn't like DL!
Now what about Carnegie Mellon DL vs. Carnegie Mellon traditional degree. Are they regarded as the same?

I actually agree with you and the others concerning UOP and DL misperceptions in hiring practices. I've given much thought about that myself. But it is too fatalistic to devise every possible scenario that might reject a DL or UOP degree. My nephew for instance was offered fully paid UOP education through his employer. Now should he turn this down because some have a dim view of UOP? I wouldn't. Or should he out of pocket pick a more respected education? I wouldn't and I know he won't.

My point is that many have few options and simply have to go with the best one available and that's why I'm assuming everyone is here pursuing DL.

Scotty again I don't actually disagree!:) Get best DL degree you can with most acceptability. I just think sometimes price, delivery methods, availability of major etc. chip away at the possibilities and I don't think anyone should feel bad about that.

what everyone is failing to understand is that those attending online night schools are primarily adults with kids and already established career. Believe me, I know. I am half-way through and ever single class is AT LEAST 3/4 filled with the above demographic.

Therefore, the name of the university does not carry as much weight as you think it does. My current employer (and possible future ones) only really care about your experience, if you cant do the job for which you are applying, and believe it or not, professional certifications over a graduate certificate. In fact, if anything, it shows your upper management that you have drive, determination and a willingness to complete an assigned task (i.e., degree completion). Nobody cares what school you attended if you've been in the work force 10+ years.

Sorry folks, THAT is the real world.

Given a choice between can you do the job, how long have you been doing the job, and what certs you have that PROVE you know the SPECIFIC subject material outweighs a theory-based education every time.

So why do I go to night school (at UMUC)? It is only to COMPLIMENT and round-out my 25+ years as a IT Program/Project Manager. Nothing more.

And for anyone that says UMUC is less that any IVY league school, well then, you must therefore assume that the material in the text books and requirements to learn that material is somehow different. Every semester, I've walked away with no less than 100 typed written pages of research not including 2-4 a week of online discussion and the professors do NOT play around when handing out grades. Trust me. You better have your act together before turning a paper in (for grading.)

Sorry, but if you're looking for an easy online degree, UMUC is NOT the place for you. Best move on down the road.

  6. SubmarineVeteran is like that guy at the party that randomly blurts out, with an air of pomp and importance, some point about a conversation that has long since passed.

"Yes, but if you consider China's agrarian infrastructure only THEN can you comment on its growth! Otherwise you're just wasting all of our times and frankly, FRANKLY, I am sick of it all!"

To which people respond with blinks and shrugs.

Welcome SubmarineVetran to Degree info! You are absolutely correct in asserting that experience is a much more important factor in landing a job than the particular school you go to. As an employer myself, I could really care less what the name of the school is, and whether it's online or B&M. I'm more interested in the job experience of the applicant.

Other members, let's give SubmarineVetran a break here. He/she is new to the board and may have come upon this thread via Google or some other search engine. If that's the case, there would be little indication that this thread has been dormant for 5 years. Unless one is used to this VBulletin interface, there is very little obvious indication of the date. Therefore it probably appeared to be a current discussion.

Honestly....it all boils down to who is working in the HR department.

There are 2 types of people in this world.

    1. People who respect people for going back to school period, be it an online degree or not.
    2. People who feel online degrees are an "easy way out".

Then consider how you will be putting this degree in place:

Entry level: pretty hard times for everyone just jumping into the industry
Job advancement: Basically, your degree could say Disney Land University as long as you have that "paper". HR don't care where it is from, as long as you have it you can move on up the latter.

THEN, consider the industry that you are in.
Online RN to BSN progams: It's split 50/50. Not just certain hospitals, but in certain states these degrees get NO RESPECT.
    Accounting: Just step right in.
MBA: So many people have MBA's now, but no networking to back it up. You just can't walk in and take over.

A personal example I can give you is how I'm getting my degree (online) and the field I work in (clinical laboratory).
There is one person in my deparment that can't stand the fact that I'm not getting a degree in medical technology (I'm getting a BS biology degree, some consider this the easy way out) and that I'm doing it online without ever having to take a lab. People like here who are in charge of hiring will through applications like mine in the trash because they feel I did not earn my degree without sweat and blood and spending my life stuck inside a class room. A medical technology programs is ridiculously time consuming. Every class as a lab and then you have to do 6 month unpaid internship. She says that obtaining my degree this was is too comfortable.

I do not think it makes sense to say that experience is more important in all cases. There are many companies that hire a majority of their new workers from top schools. Consulting firms are one such example. I think it really depends on the types of jobs you are after.

    When did anyone say that?

Yes, but even in a consulting firm, an individual with considerable experience would often be more highly valued than a person with little experience and a name-brand degree. However, I would agree that the a name-brand degree would be an advantage between competing individuals when neither have work experience.

I would wager that most people who think that online school is the "easy way out" have not been in a legitimate online class before. Online classes are often more work than their B&M counterparts.
