Internet polls, statistics and damn lies ...

There was a case here recently that went something like this:

The company that provides nearly all the telephone services here is called Telstra. Like all public utilities (I guess in every country), Telstra cops a fair public hiding at just about every turn. They don't have a good public image and are considered fair game for a whinge after a few beers down at the pub.

Anyway, Telstra decided to try an internet poll to gauge public satisfaction for one of their newest internet-based services.

The result came through after the first day and it was 284 positives and only one against! Unheard of public acclaim for Telstra!! Draft up the media release!

Then management noticed that all positive votes came from an email address on their own server. You guessed it: the Telstra guy whose job the particular service depended on had voted all 284 times! And from his work station, too!

Back to the question of anonymous posting on this NG.

Someone (Dale Carnegie?) once said, "Only a nobody has no name." I think a person should use their own name and be done with it.

    Kind regards

While I certainly always sign my posts with my own name, I also use a screen name. I have nothing to hide. I suppose it is just habit. "cdhale" has been my screen name for several email accounts (when I would move), as well as just about anything else that needed one.

I know some of you have been blasted pretty hard by anonymous posters and so I have no problem being "exposed" as it were. I just hope that you realize that the majority of us that use screen names aren't troublemakers, were just people who are trying to learn more about the DL world.

    My thoughts on it anyway,

    linyard...

    David (linyard),

I don't know if that was in response to my posting to me again; it certainly wasn't directed at you. You have contributed some quality stuff here, without blasting anybody.

Two people give their opinion about a school. One speaks negatively, cowardly hiding under the anonymity of an alias, while the other speaks positively, facing the public with his real identity... who would you believe?

  6. Re: linyard...

True. But when David first posted here he misrepresented both his background and his purpose. It took a while for him to subsequently establish some credibility (at least with me). But he has done so, so I'd like to apologize for my nastiness and general curtness towards him.

    Gert:

    No apology necessary.

My grandfather had many great words of wisdom that he bestowed upon myself and my three brothers when growing up.

    1) "There are two things that you come into this world with and two things you will leave with and no matter what wealth or success you derive, you will always be remembered for your name and your word."

    2) "In business: When engaging in a professional relationship with another person, convey to the other party that you will be their best friend or worst nightmare... they determine which."

    3) "Respect is earned, not deserved".

I should have listened to his advise.

    Mr. Traxler,

Are you offended that I gave an opinion about a school without revealing my identity? Is this what chaffs your… your… your ego and sense of self-worth?

Or am I in left field?

I think he's just reiterating a common belief around here....when given advice by an anonymous person, consider the source. It's not that difficult a concept to grasp.

I made a negative comment about a school that Traxler graduated from (but, at the time that I made the comment, I didn't know that he was a graduate of the University of Phoenix). Rightly or wrongly, I figured that:
    • Traxler was chiefly angry about my assessment of the University of Phoenix
    • and that my anonymity was merely ancillary to his anger. ;)
Mmmmm, maybe a poll should be conducted about the UoP. :D

    Here's my policy:

If the opinion, positive or negative, is supported by publicly verifiable information and by an argument that makes sense, then I will give it the weight that I think it deserves. That's true name or no name.

But if an opinion is based on personal experience, then I tend to weight opinions from identifiable individuals more heavily.

I guess my point is that an anonymous poster can't have very much personal authority for me. All they are is words on a screen. If those words don't stand on their own merits, then the point they make isn't very credible.

    Hello "me again,"

First of all, don't call me "Mr. Traxler" or "Traxler," you sound like one of those pesky telemarketers or a school teacher. Please call me by my first name, proudly displayed in my signature.:)

Second, it is not your opinion of UoP that bugs me... despite of what you may think, I am not "chiefly" angered by what you think of UoP. My issue was with your anonymity, but frankly this isn't worth my time.

I am not the one with a shattered ego problem or sense of self-worth: I am proud of what I have achieved both in my personal life and in my career. It appears that it is you the one with an ego problem, and perhaps low self-esteem... otherwise you wouldn't be hiding.

So your "poll" is simply to get back at me somehow, right? Your childish behaviour shows your true colors and level of maturity. Atta boy!

I think that the poll should be deleted by the moderator because you are being guided by vindictive motive. That's why you have only two choices in the poll (Excellent/Terrible). You know that University of Phoenix is neither excellent nor terrible.

Mister Rogers? Okay, let's not go there... ;)

You are wrong in asserting that my motive is vindictive in creating a poll about the University of Phoenix. Frankly, my motive is pure curiosity that was born out of the arguments that I've seen concerning that school. And I've seen a lot of heated discussion about that school!!!

When I first came to this forum, they were arguing about that school. Since I had just enrolled in the UoP, I was intrigued about all the arguments about that school, both for and against. I began my readings with a naive open mind. Some were saying that the UoP is okay because it is RA, while others vehemently lambasted it as the bottom of the RA barrel. Thus, this argument was here long before I ever knew about this website!

No, the poll and the discussion will not be deleted by the moderators because this forum was created for discussion, both pro and con, concerning the opinions about all the different schools and programs. Sorry about that. For me, this forum was the straw that broke the camel's back i.e. I withdrew from the UoP based upon the many comments that I read from various posters at DegreeInfo.com.

You too must make your decision. Or maybe you already have? ;)

You stated that your motive is "pure curiosity". C'mon "me again" stop playing with words. You don't even believe that statement. You may try to deceive others but any attempt to deceive yourself will lead to many possibilities. U of P is not Harvard and it will never be. I don't believe that U of P is the worst RA school in the country. I know about many community colleges that are worse than U of P.
By the way, how is your professor who received his Ed.D from Nova performing in the classroom? Is he good? (Sorry for digressing)

    As pure as it gets...

    Mister Rogers, :)

Yes, my curiousity is about as pure as it gets. :)

He is an extremely good professor. Academically, he is one of the toughest professors I've ever sat under.

After having read the debate about NOVA on this forum, I was intrigued when I saw that he was a doctoral graduate from NOVA. Subsequently, I am paying close attention to his teaching methodology. Academically, he was rigorous, but was also extremely through. If NOVA taught him that teaching style, then they have an excellent doctoral program. Incidentally, he is also a retired chief of the USF campus police.

Why do you ask? Are you considering NOVA? Or if you think I'm lambasting non-traditional programs, then your barking up the wrong tree.
