Wayland Baptist University is introducing a DSL, fully online with an optional summer residency week in Plainview, TX. The degree can be completed in as little as 2 years. An interesting feature is that a concentration is available in Humanities and Culture. Other concentrations: Christian Ministry, Education, Nursing Organizational Leadership.

    SACS, if anyone's wondering.

Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL), which emphasizes communication, leadership, structure, team building, and cultural understanding - all from a Christian perspective.

It does say "Baptist" right there on the label.

The University of Jamestown now offers a Doctor of Leadership degree, styled DL. Three concentrations are available: Coaching & Consulting Leadership, Non-Profit Leadership, and Individually Designed. The landing page states it the program is 100% online. The course list includes "practical residencies;" perhaps these are delivered online.

Very difficult to ferret out this one. They say 48 credits are required, but 45 are listed and 9 more in a concentration are required. That looks like 54, not 48.

Tuition is listed at $4,500 per semester for 6 credits. That would be $750 per credit, but it isn't clearly stated. If so, that would be either $36K or $$40.5 in tuition, plus fees and other expenses.

The example they show includes expenses for housing, food, and travel, but it's 100% online? And, as Jonathan notes, it has residencies that might or might not be online (?).

The school has a overt Christian philosophy, but it doesn't show up in course titles. It would be interesting to see what course descriptions say.

  7. LSU Online has a doctorate in Leadership through the Shreveport campus. It is an odd one. Classified as an Ed.D but the curriculum has no education related coursework. Plus the website specifically says that it is a leadership program and that "teachers likely do not qualify".

"An important note to take into account is the misconception that this degree is in educational leadership when, in reality, it is not. Teachers might not qualify for this degree due to their limited leadership experience."

Optional focus in emergency management, leadership studies, or communications.

    Current cost is $ 25,800...
just barely out of my own price range.

Do they mean that this program won't be considered qualifying for administrative positions? It seems very odd that they'd specifically say teachers are disqualified from admissions.

  9. The program requires several years of leadership experience to apply.

I believe the expectation is that most teachers do not have that...principals perhaps, but not teachers.

As I said, it is an odd one. Technically an Ed.D. but the curriculum is not related at all to education.

I think they're trying to make a distinction regarding experience, expecting applicants to have "leadership" (supervisory) experience, something classroom teachers typically do not have. This is because it's a leadership program that, for some odd reason, results in an EdD. If it was another form of doctorate in leadership, they likely wouldn't have to make this distinction about teachers in particular. (Who might be drawn to the EdD aspect without being prepared for the leadership curriculum.)

It really shouldn't be an EdD.

It's not really that, or a PhD, or a DBA. They could have just called it a DSc, I suppose. But I suppose the nomenclature wars were lost long ago.

In some places, a Doctor of Science is an honorary degree. But it is an earned degree in many others, comparable to a PhD. It's one of my personal favorites. (My all-time favorite is the DTech, awarded by some universities and polytechnics.)

A DSc or ScD would be inappropriate for this program. In some countries, the DSc is a higher degree than the PhD. In other countries, like the U.S., the DSc is practically the same as a PhD, but it's only awarded in STEM fields. This program has no STEM in it, but it does have a couple of education courses. Format-wise, it is more like an EdD even though it doesn't have much education content. We have seen universities create new titles, such as the D.Lead.
