Well, as an old political science major from way back, I think that both the no establishment clause and the free exercise clause of the First Amendment would be interpreted so as to say that we could not forbid a Satanist from exercising his rights to run for political office nor could we forbid a politician in office from converting to Satanism. Now, as a practical matter, I would think that a Satanist is going to have a terribly difficult time getting elected to public office in this country and a politician who converts to Satanism while in office would likely lose enough supporters to get thrown out of office next go-round. Even if a Satanist did successfully get into public office, the chances of him or her finding enough other politicians to agree to the establishment of Satanism as the state religion would be extremely small and such an action, if successful, would likely be held unconstitutional by the courts.

By the way, Jimmy, are you ever going to answer my post at the bottom of that Lieberman thread?

Yea, but look at what you have accomplished!

    I commend you!

A Satanist running for governor? Oh my!

For some of my Christian friends on the board here, I'll bet secretly a few of you wish this were the good old days (like 1512 or something?) so we could just toast that Satanist on a stake like he probably deserves! Just like all those Satanists who met a similar fate at the hands of Catholicism and the Inquisition so many many years ago.

Hey! Even the Russians apologized (eventually, and in less than 100 years) for the crimes of Stalin! Does anyone here know if the Catholic Church has ever fessed up to its own crimes from that period of time of witch burning, Jew killin', and heretic hunting? Or were they right all along? ;)

Now Carl, are you implying there have been no religious atrocities committed by the Jews?

All religious faiths have committed crimes against humanity.
