Re: Re: Re: Panama Canal Zone

When I was on active duty, I had this staff sergeant working for me who grew up in Columbia. While stationed in Panama, he met and married his wife. His plan was to return to Panama after he retired from active duty, even though his wife and he were both U.S. citizens.

Yes, the official currency of Panama is the U.S. dollar.

I once had an assignment to Panama (to Howard AFB), but Bush 41's invasion (killing hundreds of civilians to arrest one drug dealer) quashed that. What I was going to lead was no longer in existence. I've always regretted not going.

Like Nero, who allegedly ordered the torching of Rome to blame the Christians, Noriega's paramilitary set fire to the homes of the poor to blame the Americans. Civilians died, caught in the crossfire between US troops and Panamanian paramilitary/military dressed as civilians.

Noriega was a monster, created in part by the support of the US govt (the CIA to be more specific). For the good of the whole country, his removal from power was necessary... and despite the loss of innocent human life, operation Just Cause did what the majority of us wanted, but could not do on our own.

Howard was a very nice place... I hear they're building a shopping mall nearby.
