How much value would having knowledge of non-profit management (corporate not academic) have in the for-profit world? I did see this program a while ago and it made me wonder if there is much crossover and how much value there would be to understand the "other side". For those that have worked in both sectors - any thought? Continuing Education > Professional and Workforce Development > Nonprofit Management
Ive known people in MBA programs looking for easy courses cross-register in MPA or non-profit management courses. That said, I think there is some cross over.
Not at all. I think it's probably more in what your strengths lie. I should clarify, the people doing that were finance guys and were taking MPA/non-profit finance classes. To hear them tell it, the courses were easier than the core curriculum finance courses in the MBA program. Not trying to disparage anyones MPA or Non-Profit Management degrees.
My MPA offered specialization courses from both the MBA curriculum and a non-profit management curriculum from separate degree programs. I know several people who took NFP courses and have noted how beneficial they were in public management because of the increasing tendency to collaborate with different sectors to maximize resources in service delivery. I took classes in both as part of my MPA electives. I work in the public sector, but my educational background in business and non-profits has come in handy in some of the community partnerships my org. has established with groups and orgs. outside the public sector. My personal opinion is that any time you can branch out and gain specialized knowledge that will set you apart from others with the same basic credential you will be at an advantage.
