Scott, I fail to see your point with this statement. In your efforts to detract from legitimate schools have you resorted to religious affiliation as a target?

Most religions have universities and many top notch schools. Maybe you've heard of some of them..... University of Notre Dame, Boston College, Holy Cross, Brigham Young, and claiming a degree from the University of Minnesota you're certainly familiar with the University of St. Thomas.

The thought that a religious aspect in a school should be reason to stay away is absolutely preposterous. If you don't share their beliefs, stay out of their seminary programs. But take advantage of good education where you can find it.

Of course, there has been the occasional caution on this board that students should consider Liberty University's "fundamentalist" identity before enrolling in one of its programs. These comments have not been directly only to those contemplating enrollment in its religion/seminary program, but to those interested in its other programs, as well.

    What a strange thread.

All Scott stated is that you should consider the religious perspective of the school before choosing it... isn't this common sense?

I thought that considering a "religious perspective" was a very reasonable point. Touro College happens to be a school that was founded on Jewish principles.

It wasn't meant in a negative way, since many school have "religious affiliations" that may be something a potential student may want to consider.

    University of Nebraska-Lincoln Doctoral Program

    Hi!

I have been reading about the University of Nebraska - Lincoln's DL doctoral offerings, but is anyone on this list enrolled in their Education program?

I'm hoping for some "news from the trenches."

    Thanks!

I am new to this forum but I have a few points to make. First, Scott sounded like an anti-Semite. Why is he concerned about the Jewish origin of Touro College and Touro International University? Second, Scott implied that RA amounts to nothing. Is he saying that an unaccredited degree is the same as an accredited degree? Third, you (Ken) seem to be biased against distance learning. What is wrong with virtual education branch of a reputable college? Tour University is a virtual branch of Touro College just as Columbia Education Network is a virtual branch campus of Columbia University.
Has it ever occurred to you (Ken) and Scott that one school alone (or one country alone for that matter) does not have all the resources to serve all distance learners? Although the reputation of schools varies but as long as a school has a recognized accreditation, the utility of a degree from that school may not be questioned in many circles. Besides, such a degree is a legitimate degree.

Bottom line: Choose an accredited degree if it meets your present and future needs.

Mr. Rogers: How exactly did I sound like an "anti-semite?" By stating that Touro College is a Jewish-founded college? I was mearly pointing it out for people who did not know.

Would you call me a "Papist" if I pointed out that Notre Dame was a "catholic school?" Grow up.

As for the rest of it. Too bad.

    Thank you!

I just wanted to thank Mr. Ahrendt for his suggestion as I was previously unaware of the UNL program. I will look into that. Thanks again!

Many administrators in higher education have DL Ph.Ds from Nova University, Capella University and Walden University. All of these degree programs are regionally accredited. Now, it's probably true that Harvard and other ivy league institutions might not value a non traditional, DL Ph.D. but a number of GOOD schools do!

Mr. Rogers has forgotten to take is medication again.

    1) You cannot reasonably compare Columbia and Touro
    2) Many legitimate universities offer extension courses. Most often they are not for academic credit.
    3) If academic credit is offered, they most often will not offer complete degrees.
    4) If complete degrees are offered, they will be granted from the University and not by the virtual campus.

To suggest that a comparison of CEN and TUI is comparing apples and oranges would be suggesting the two are too similar.

Yes, I am against distance learning... that is funny.

The reputation of schools do vary but, all things equal, it is more reasonable to study at a more reputable school.

    "Legitimate" is a relative term.

Bottom Line: Choose an unaccredited degree no degree at all, if it meets your present and future needs.

I am not employed in the field.

Oral Roberts University has an Ed.D. is Educational Leadership with several emphasis (some secular and some specifically Christian). I know they had a major in Christian Higher Education administration (I don't know about secular).
    http://www.oru.edu

ORU is fairly well ranked by US News (2nd Tier) and their education graduates finish top in the state on teacher exams (IIRC).

Courses are done on line and through modular (a few days) & summer sessions (couple of weeks).

Unlike Liberty which does NOT make religious demands on its DL students (ie a secularly oriented person could take courses a feel relatively comfortable) ORU has an Honor Code which must be signed (no drinking, smoking, engaging in homosexual acts, or showing up on campus bearded). It is somewhat amusing to think that due to the beard and the issue of drinking, Christ might be hauled in front of the dean for disciplinary action.

    Jesus,

    Had long, facial hair
    Had no problem with wine

    Had very un-republican tendencies;
Looked after children and fed the poor,
Told people to pay their taxes,
Was against very public (i.e. school, perhaps) prayers.

Yup, I don't think he would last long at ORU.

Easy on Touro Ken... at least you have to acknowledge that both Columbia U. and Touro received their regional accreditation from the same Middle States Commission on Higher Education :)

Or.. just maybe.. the Middle States forgot to take their medication too....?

    UNL and TUI

My husband is enrolled in the PHD in ed admin from UNL and he is getting along very well in that program. This program is at a distance and the technology, the interaction and feedback from instruction and other students have all been very positive experiences from him.

The only real drawbacks for him so far have been that he doesn't have committee, and they are very slow about getting committees for PhD. students. The communication with advisors is very frustrating. Frankly I seriously doubt that there is much difference between the on-campus and off-campus programs overall.

I am enrolled in TUI and I love it. The benefits have been incredible. The faculty are fantastic, very supportive and knowledgeable. This is the start of my second quarter and it just keeps getting better. I am a graduate assistant this quarter and the opportunity to provide support to students on line is definitely one that I have been seeking. I am confident that by the time I am completing this program that DL degrees will have greater acceptance, if not then that is something we will continue to prove.

By the way I am not Jewish and that has had no impact whatsoever.

    Thanks!!

    Thanks, Cathy!

    Hi Cathy!

Thanks for the great info. I just have a few more quick questions...

How long does your husband think it will realistically take to complete his degree?

What's the deal with the grad assistantships at TUI? Do they pay you anything, or do you get any kind of discounts on tuition? (I'm so nosy.) Also, what kind of time frame are you looking at for your TUI PhD?

Thanks again for your help -- choosing a doctoral program is a big decision, and it's nice to hear about actual experiences before I start sending out applications.

    Regards,
    Susan

Touro is a GREAT alternative in choosing a non-traditional component. I did extensive research on TUI and they are very well respected in the academia arena based on their brick and mortar programs that they offer such as their JD “ABA”, OD, “Calf” and other bachelor related programs. Also, I had the opportunity to visit their Main Campus in NY during a business trip. Although, no one knew anything about the “Online” programs, I was very impressed with their professionalism and I do understand that their "Online" program is housed in Calif.

In doing so, considering that I feel that TUI is an excellent choice, I decided to attend Argosy DBA, program for the following reasons:

    1. I wanted a more personal approach such as their eight (8) weeks residency component. Also, I live about (2) hours away from the Sarasota campus; the drive is not bad at all.

    2. My employer does not accept a totally a “Inter-Net” degree component. Although, I tried convincing them, but to no avail.

    3. After visiting the Argosy’s Sarasota Campus, I was very impressed with their facility. They have a very large office space (25,000 square feet) to include a very nice size library.

    4. Argosy University is approved by the State of Florida to confer Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. Their was an issue in Miami-Dade County School Board concerning a former superintendent that had a D.L. “RA”, but is was not approved by the State of Florida. Although, the guy cleared his name, he really had a hard time. This isolated incident was more of a political issue then any else.

TUI is in the cutting edge of technology. They are the only RA accredited university that offer a completely Ph.D. program online. I think this a great accomplishment considering that the Ivey Leaguers have not figure out away to provide similar/same program.

What medication are you talking about? The professors at the brick & mortar school that you attended did not teach you how to behave in the public? Too bad.
