The UC schools are Public Ivies. USC is usually not included among Ivy Plus, but there are multiple lists out there.

 

What’s the difference between an “Ivy Plus” and a “Near Ivy”?

There are official Ivy Plush affiliations. They almost always include Stanford, MIT, and University of Chicago. The others have also included Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Georgetown.

I'm set to graduate with a Doctorate in Nursing next month, and I'll attain ABD status in the Cumberland Leadership Ph.D. program after the following term. I also hold an honorary Doctor of Ministry from Abide University. Currently, my interest is mainly in obtaining near Ivy certificates. It feels like they're attempting to make me spend my children's inheritance without any ROI

 

Darn, DI is constantly tempting me!

I've decided to apply for the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) at Johns Hopkins. Specifically, I'm aiming for the Bloomberg Fellows Program. Thankfully, I have until December to get everything in order and align my ducks in a row.

Serious guys give me some pros and cons of doing this

I would not say it is is marketing b.s. as much as it is society (or the subset of society that pays close attention to higher education) creating a term to use when discussing “tiers” of schools. It is easier to say “Ivy Plus” than it is to rattle off X number of schools.

Personally, I have never once heard of folks at these schools utilize the term “Ivy Plus”. I know I am only one person and do not represent anyone else, but I genuinely believe this is a term given by those not at these “Ivy Plus” schools.

 

I have not gone through all but I do know that UChicago is missing their online Masters of Science in Applied Data Science program. It used to be the Master of Science in Analytics but they changed the naming of the degree a couple of months ago to better showcase their data science oriented curriculum and such.

Although the Ivy League is a sports conference, I think society has adopted it also measuring a level of prestige in academia. I’d venture to say most folks hear Ivy League and their brain goes to academics, not sports.

 

Good observation. I, for one, never even knew, until I read this thread, that it was a sports conference - and I first learned of the Ivy League schools over 60 years ago. I was a teenager; there was an "Ivy League" fashion trend in the late 50s, predominantly for men. I read a bit in newspapers about the origin of the term -- nothing was said about sports -- all about the schools. Who knew?

 

Circa 1996 York University in Toronto ran an advertising campaign with the slogan "No ivy on our walls, no cobwebs in our minds." Their principal local competitor the University of Toronto does have ivy on its walls (and stands in for Harvard in scenes in Good Will Hunting and Suits).

 

Just wait till we get Ivy Plus Plus.
