    SIMON:

The pathway you describe to reach a career decision may be viable for a younger person, say under 22 years of age. Developmentally, such an individual may not have formed a career-self, does not have the familial responsibility and committments of adult learners, has many years to decide or change their mind as well as having the resilience to recoup and change direction if necessary.

However, for the average adult student who is inundated with family, work, financial and time commitments and constraints, they do not have the luxury to wait until the "first two years" to make a decision. In order to enhance their chances of success, they need to approach their educational/career transition and process in a more focused manner due to the limitations imposed on them by the realities and responsibilities that increasing age places on most of us.

Actually, the first two years (the so-called freshman requirements, which take up the freshman and sophomore years) will likely be the pretty same regardless of one's major or school. So doing that is not two years wasted. If I recall correctly, my freashman requirements ("first two years") included 12 sem hrs each in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and professional education plus 6 sem hrs each in English and physical education. Under those requirements, if I were either starting out or starting over, and if I thought I wanted to major in education, psychology, or social work, I would take a 3 sem hr Intro to Ed class (annd put it under prof ed reqs), a 6 sem hr General Psych sequence (and put it under soc sci reqs), and a 3 sem hr Intro to Social Work class (and put it under either soc sci or prof ed reqs). Thus, I would get a sense of which of the three majors I like best while fulfilling my freshman requirements.

    re: bachelor's programs in psychology

    hi japhy4529,

Thanks for the info about additional psych programs that I hadn't yet discovered - - I will have to check those out!!

    According to this link:

    http://www.scps.nyu.edu/landing/index.jsp?wfId=976

NYU's SPCS is now offering several degrees online. And this Feb. 2005 article from NYU's student newspaper states as much (this is just an an excerpt):

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies is planning a September launch for NYU Online, a new completely Web-based degree program, university officials announced last week. The program will offer Bachelor's degrees for the same tuition as NYU's traditional, classroom-based programs.

NYU Online is modeled on the Virtual College, the university's first online program, which started 12 years ago and offered only graduate-level courses in creative writing, information technology and management.

As part of the new program, students can earn a B.S. in leadership and management studies or information systems management. They can also work toward a B.A. in a variety of social sciences concentrations, including psychology and sociology, economics, political science, organizational behavior and communication, and international studies.

By expanding its online offerings into a full-fledged degree program, NYU is trying to target working adults who are seeking intensive web-based education at a top-tier university.

They even have the application available for download:

Have I missed something? Is an NYU psych degree online actually not an option? If it is not, I apologize for the mixup!
