On Being Called Doctor

    BTW, I address all of my NCU mentors as Dr. whether they like it or not. I do like to observe customs and respect the institution.

    Objections regarding being called "doctor" on this forum almost always come from people who do not hold that designation. Those of us who do don't think about it much.

    No, I would not expect people who know me to address me as such, just as I would not expect them to address me as "mister."

    But if "mister" is appropriate in a situation, then "doctor" is, too.

    Around the office, I've found, the ego on the line is with the person NOT holding the doctorate but talking about someone else's. THAT person, in most cases IMHO, doesn't care.

    This is very true, even in the Asian context as well. I personally feel it would be very appropriate to refer to one's doctoral title when addressing them in a formal or semi-formal setting.
