I've checked into the nova DBA program but it doesn't seem to be a DL program, it seems to be more of a limited residency program. They require one weekend a month for a three month course. Is this what everyone else has experienced or am I looking in the wrong spot?

It is not 100% DL. There are some online programs but not the DBA. It amazes me that people throw Nova into the same bucket as UoP, NCU, and TUI. I don't think that is fair and think Nova is a "step above" in acceptablity in the academic world (now that is just my opinion).

If you had to choose one 100% (or close to it) DL DBA program that is the most acceptable in the mainstream academic world, which would it be?

I live in Florida and Nova is respected. Many college professors have DBAs from Nova. I have really considered Nova but they just cost too much when compared to NCU. Looking back, I should have let reputation rather then cost be the deciding factor.

Acceptability of online schools in Academia is low. Most online schools really graduate people to become adjuncts rather than professors. If adjunct is your career goal, the online DBA would do just fine. If you want to become a full time professor, I'm afraid that there is no shortcut but to attend a regular program or at very least a program from a traditional and reputable school that has some online components. Nova is one of those schools that have credibility and can work for a professor job but you need to pay the price and expect to spend at least 5 years part time rather than the typical 3 year part time at online schools.

That is a great summation of the situation and I really appreciate the information. Sometimes the informatino can be vague and I've never been too sure of what to expect from a DBA from Capella, Walden or NCU. So, in short, at DBA from Capella or NCU (a much cheaper option) are of equal value?

    Adam,

Pricey, but if you can make the residencies Kennesaw State University has an AACSB accredited DBA that is a 3 year limited residency program.

    KSU DBA

I wish I did it in 3 years. I started in the fall of 2004 and plan to finish in the fall of 2010 which is 6 years!

Capella charges a lot more mainly because they are more tested product. Many Capella graduates do get tenure tracks but you also have the fact that they graduate hundreds every year so seeing one here and there with tenure tracks doesn't mean they are a ticket to a TT position but this is reflected in the price.

I would say that if you are good and you do a good dissertation, both will be regarded equally so I don't think the difference in price is worth it.

Sorry, quite few reported 3 years or even less at NCU. It is possible that you are doing a good dissertation and for this reason the time but if you check the posts, at least 3 have reported less or within the 3 year range.

Don't worry about the poppycock that is written by pundits who don't have regionally accredited doctorates. If you make it through NCU, then it will serve you well. A research doctorate isn't for most people -- and that's why the attrition rate is extraordinarily high. Incidentally, Nova had a CRAPPY reputation in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and into the 90s. Nova had the reputation of being a degree mill in the eyes of the general public for many years, even though it was NOT. However, the reputation improved significantly in the 21st Century. Don't judge a book by its paper cover.

Now that you say that, I remember I was at a Reserve drill in Tampa in 1993 and someone just finished her masters at USF and I was talking to her about returning to school someday. She said, "what ever you do, don't go to Nova. They are not a real school." I guess it is all (or at least some) in the eye of the beholder.

Could you please share your experiences when you were earning your PhD and how they compare to other schools you investigated?
