What is a weird name? NewU University is located in Washington, D.C., and is seeking Middle States accreditation. It would be better to go with Newu University at least it sounds something. I am wondering if anyone would put in their resume. :)

That is definitely a "counterprogramming" sort of name. Their campus is an office in downtown DC, about half an hour from me, and they offer periodic tours, so I've signed up for one on the 14th. How could I not?

I don't think so. It's NewU - i.e "New You" - and that's what they intend, for their grads. I hope they pull it off. If Middle States takes them, tuition and fees for a 120-credit Bachelor's (done in 3 years) would be just under $10K total!

I looked through the Psych degree curriculum - I like what they're presenting here. And I think DC would be a very good market for this school. From the pics - they make it appeal to African-American students.

Howard University in DC, an HBCU, costs $48K a year, for 4 years. So you can save around $180K and a year of your life by going to NewU. That's quite a draw. I wish them well. (And I wish Howard U. continued success, too. Howard U. is justly famous - I think there's a need and a market for both schools.)

And @TEKMAN "Newu" means "and yes" in the Zulu language. I had to look it up. I don't think this DC school intends to appeal specifically to the 9 million Zulu people in South Africa -- so I'll go with NewU. At least I didn't have to look it up. :)

That's per year the way I read it. Still lower than average, though.

    It's $2,500 tuition, plus $750 in fees, per year. Oops - no. That's per SEMESTER. So -- 3250 x 6 (3 years). $19,500 total.
    Price confirmed here: https://newu.university/cost/ $6500 a year, 3 years. $19,500 total.
OK $160K less than Howard. Still a chunk of change.

BTW -speaking of Howard, here are 100 famous alumni, sorted by their Wiki page popularity. First is VP Kamala Harris. And there's P-Diddy (Sean Combs) and one of my favourite actresses of all time - the late Roxie Roker (Helen Willis. on the Jeffersons.)

So - the total for 3 years (120 credits - full degree) at NewU is less than ONE SEMESTER of Howard U. As I said, there's a market for both. The difference would buy ME a Cadillac, five Italian suits and a good down payment on a house. It'd have to be somewhere outside DC. Far outside - like Wyoming. Or maybe Iowa --- Hey, @Dustin... :)

DMV still has the University of District Columbia (UDC) as another HBCU whose tuition is much more affordable than Howard University. But I like NewU University's Entrepreneurship program, who does not want to be your own boss?:) :D

I don't. I know what I'm like, to work for. Awful. You know how I get, around here sometimes, no? :)
There was a BIG celebration at the office, when I retired. ....I wasn't invited. :)

The "New School" - is over a Century old. It opened in 1919. It's more than one school. It's a collection of very good schools - e.g. Parsons Institute of Design - a stellar school. I know its reputation from my fashion studies.

No wonder the "New School" is expensive -- it's that good. At the age of 105 years, it's not a "startup" like one-school NewU. But given a chance...NewU just might be really something!

And here's a bit about another well-known component of "The New School" - The New School for Social Research. also founded in 1919. It is accredited by Middle States Association.

"About. The New School for Social Research (NSSR) is a graduate institution in the heart of New York City. It generates progressive scholarship and historically grounded education in the social sciences and philosophy. Its ten departments and programs offer masters and doctoral degrees." From here: https://www.niche.com/graduate-schools/the-new-school-for-social-research/#:~

Again, this is a school over 100 years old - in a completely different league from NewU, which is a recent startup.
Yes. Again, very different to NewU - not "very similar" as claimed above ....And how, exactly, is that name, "The New School" weird?

It is weird from my point of view because it is a good name perhaps when the school is new but at some point the founders should be hoping it will no longer be new and then it isn't such a good name anymore. On the other hand, perhaps they were thinking New York eclipsed York and so their school might someday eclipse all other schools in the world and then New School would no longer seem like a weird name?

"New England" isn't weird and it's been in use far longer. Nobody ever thinks "New Canaan, CT" is weird, do they? People there have money - so it can't be weird.

"The average annual household income in New Canaan is $239,209, while the median household income sits at $145,244 per year."
    https://www.point2homes.com/US/Neighborhood/CT/New-Canaan-Demographics.html#

New School folks hoping their school would eclipse all others? Yeah, weird. Sounds a little like megalomania - but YOU thought that up, Bill .... I don't think the New School people did. Not in public, anyway. In private, who knows? :)

Yeah, New Mexico. That's where @nosborne48 lives. And nobody thinks he's weird --- do they? :)

I thought it was the "school" meaning the "school of thought" that was "new"?

    Johann Well-Known Member

Sure. I didn't think of it, but it's certainly plausible, both in "The New School of Social Research" and in the umbrella "New School." Whether or not that was the intention, I don't see either name as "weird." Or New Mexico. That State rocks! Got a whole Universe goin' on, there! :)

We'll have to open a whole new thread to define "weird." I'll submit a list of names -- my own will be on it. :)

    There's a bumper sticker..."New Mexico. It ain't new and it ain't Mexico".
