Ryan, I think that in general it is very risky to take DETC classes in the hope that the credits will transfer to an RA school. ACE is a separate company that makes a living evaluating courses. The way I read the above statement, it indicates that ACE will have had to evaluate that specific DETC course that you want to transfer. Getting an ACE evaluation on a course that they have not already evaluated is not something that you can afford. They typically evaluate courses where there will be a very large number of people that will take it like military training courses. Do not plan on a DETC course being ACE evaluated unless you check that specific course with ACE first.

If Penn Foster is RA then the above paragraph doesn't apply.

Thanks for the advice. I see what you're saying.

One other thing that has been popping into my head is that I need to figure out what programs are acceptable to qualify for the CPA exam. I already know that Maine requires 150 credits from a "program approved by the board" However, it makes no reference as to what would be approved by the board. Just something I have to look into.

I'm currecntly looking for a RA DL school that is pretty inexpensive. Any suggestions besides what has been said here? Maybe just a cheaper one for an Assosciates that would transfer to Excelsior or somewhere similar.

I'm looking into a community college around here because they offer an On-line version of their Accounting (Associate's) program. I just need to figure out what credetials they have to figure out if they would transfer to a B.S. program. The only thing it tells me on the site is that they are accepted at the U of Maine.

Upper Iowa University (regionally accredited school) offers a B.S. in Accounting, which may be completed 100% online. The tuition is $269/credit.

I'm sure that there are many other options out there. Try copying and pasting this search in Google:

bachelor AND accounting OR accountancy "online degree" site:.edu

    Try this one too:

associate AND accounting OR accountancy "online degree" site:.edu

    Thanks Japhy,

There are a lot of choices for B.S. that I have to look forward to. A LOT. And Thanks for the search hints to, they are helpful.

I took the plunge today and enrolled in Penn Foster's program. I just faxed them a copy of my diploma and finished the math and reading assesments. 93 on Reading and 100 on Math. The math one actually came really easy for me and I was surprised what I recalled from H.S. The reading seamed a little tricky. Not hard, just a bunch of questions seemed like two answers would fit really good. Overall, I'm happy with my first two scores even if they are just assesments :)

I'm under the impression now tat I have to wait for them to mail me my course material before I actually begin. Anyone have experience with this school and know otherwise?

My job is helping students figure out what courses and programs are right for them, and I have to say that I really do pretty much love it -- or else I wouldn't also do it on online forums for fun! I also have an administration that is supportive of things like Free Curricula Center and, now that I'm a grad student, writing a paper to submit to a conference.

Now that I think about it, I've had a number of different jobs that were lots of fun.

    Ryan,

I got an AAS degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering Technology. There is a HUGH difference between the two. Im my experiences, most "Technology" degrees are oriented for mid level jobs of "doers" people who acctually do the task, not design. The school i went to has now broke the program into a "technology" area and a "science" area. The science area focuses on Chemisty, Calc, and Physics to prep for a 4 year degree, the two year program only has algebra, and trig with very light calc. They are not interchangeable in alot of cases. A course on circuit design based on algebra or trig WILL NOT transfer to a school that is an Engineering school and is Calc based.

Id advise looking at course requirements and then double checking. If you want an engineering degree I have to agree with Xeric, with lab time and require study, Id try to go to a B&M school if you can. I think it would be really tough to do labs that demonstrate scientific concepts with a prof and controlled enviorment. That doesnt mean though you cant save some bucks and knock out your LA classes in CLEP and DSST test....

    Good luck!!!!!!

You're welcome. And congrats on selecting a school. As others have mentioned though, you may have some difficulty transferring some of these credits to an RA school. Not trying to be a downer here. Just realize that there will be some "hoop jumping" in your future!

Keep in mind that nowhere does it state that your degree has to be in accounting. It just states that you must have 150 credits, 15 of which in Accounting, Auditing and Ethics. You could pursue a degree in Art History (assuming that "the board" approves the institution) and just take some Accounting courses as electives.

BTW, after you complete your A.S. at Penn Foster, you may wish to check out Peru State College - http://www.peru.edu. Peru is a regionally accredited college located in Nebraska. Tuition is only $114/credit! That's right, only $114! So, a three credit course will run you just $342!!! That's crazy cheap...

While Peru doesn't offer a B.S. in Accounting online, they do offer an extremely inexpensive B.S. in Business which may be completed entirely online. Concentrations are available in Marketing and Management.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - Management
    http://www.hpcnet.org/peru/onlineeducation/bsm

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - Marketing
    http://www.hpcnet.org/peru/onlineeducation/bsmarketing

You could always pursue the A.S. at Penn Foster and then transfer over to Peru for the B.S. IIRC, a member of this forum named "TCord1964", has mentioned that Peru will accept a Penn Foster Associates lock stock and barrel in transfer to one of their Bachelor programs.

Obviously, you will want to make sure that you check with "the board" to ensure that Peru State College is an acceptable institution.

BTW, here is a link to the CPA education/application/testing requirements (you likely already have this):

    http://www.kaplancpareview.com/downloads/cpa_states/ME/MaineApplicationProcess.pdf

After you complete your B.S. at Peru (or wherever you decide to go) you could enroll in a Masters in Accounting/Accountancy program (online or B&M) to gather the credits necessary for licensure in Maine.

    Japhy,

Wow...Lots of information in that one. Thankyou.

I have, for the most part, decided that I would like for my degree to strictly be in accounting. I have two reasons for this:
    1) It is what I have decided that I would like to do, so I believe I would be better off in a program geared more towards it than all business aspects
    2) I would like to learn enough from the program that I could sit down and take the exams and feel confident. I know with Mastering in Accounting that would definatley help, but a little more can never hurt, right?

Having said that, I checked into Peru, and have ruled that one out.

Finally, I should ad: I was conserned about price for the A.S. I am NOT concerned about the price for a B.S. I feel the B.S. is where it starts to really count. What I am considered about is finding a good school with good accreditations that will take most if not all of my Penn Foster Credits.

(I will have help for the B.S. My parents will pay for that if I can prove to them and myself that I can stick with it for the A.S. which I am paying for)

And one last thing: Those search terms you supplied me with are really helpful. They really weed out a lot of the unrelated schools for me. Thankyou :)

Ted... no offense really.. but your lists of schools is incredibly out of date... some of the very links you are posting don't work. Like the christopher newport university one. Others the schools are no longer accepting students like michigan tech. And even more don't even have undergrad engineering online like indiana state.

Ted, thanks for the lists. Even though a little dated, it was still helpful :)
