There's a difference long before the trial. The scientist's knowing how to investigate if this particular plant, organism or whatever might provide a discovery - based on years of education and experience. And if analysis is encouraging, how to extract the desired ingredient, formulate a dose for further experimentation etc. Not for amateurs or random walkers in the woods. Or people who simply want to play on credulity and make a quick buck -- or million or two.

I think Neuhaus summed it up nicely.

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.” :)

Personally, the most fundamental basis of natural medicine starts with what you put in your mouth. I wouldn’t have a job and neither would the pharmaceutical companies if it wasn’t for all the crap people eat and drink! People expect a pill to solve their health problems but aren’t proactive in living healthy. Nutrition and exercise is such a huge factor in healthy living!

It is a factor. It is not a panacea. Andy Kaufman was a non-smoking vegan who died of lung cancer. Healthy living is great. However, healthy living does not guarantee that you'll never get sick. It can prevent many conditions. There are many more that will come whether you eat kale or not.

I never said there are guarantees! Well except for death and taxes!
