There have been recent revelations of church leaders having sexual contact with underage girls and molesting little boys. There have also been accusations of an SBC leader telling victims of domestic violence not to leave their husbands and victims of rape not to go to the police. https://www.vox.com/identities/2018/6/12/17449240/sbc-southern-baptist-convention-annual-meeting-paige-patterson-me-too
I just said in another thread that I wasn't a fan of distance judgment, but then you had to go and post this....
It didn't get a lot of press in the US but this recently happened too https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-44442233
Love this scene, and this movie. We recently introduced our fourteen-year old son to Casablanca, and it's now one of his favourites.
Am very glad this is happening. While the issue of sexual abuse is not the specific thing that drove us from the organized church, the related issue of leadership abuse and the groupthink among the laity that supports it was, and that is what creates an environment in which sexual abuse can flourish. It's another reason why I believe for the most part that the organized church is becoming a corrupt place where programs and systems predominate over truth and people. Jesus was about truth, no matter what, let the chips fall where they may, He spoke about whispers in the inner rooms being shouted from rooftops. He went out of His way to tear down the systems that oppressed people. The ultimate iconoclast. So when I see the church trying to sweep ugliness under the rug and oppressing people who are whistleblowers, I know I'm looking at something that just isn't about Jesus.
