    Derp, derp, derp.

...and THEN Maniac finally figured out that his taxes are already paying for all these magazines to be available at his local library. Not only that, but electronic versions are available to be "checked out" via his library card.

So, no, I wont be spending $200 a year on 52 half-read issues of The Economist. but I'm still considering subscribing to Scientific American.

I've been wanting to spend more time at the library anyway, since lately I've been spending an unbalanced portion of my time playing video games. I figure that surrounding myself with all the books in the world is a surefire way to get myself to read at least one of them :D

I was never a big library user. Part of it was that the libraries in NE Pennsylvania were absolutely terrible and a waste of time. Had I spent my high school years in NYC libraries instead I would have likely developed the habit earlier on.

Anyway, about a year ago I walked in and have been hooked ever since. Perhaps best of all is how I ran around telling everyone I knew how great the library was as if I had unearthed a secret.

"Dude, they have all of these books and you can borrow them for free!"

Once upon a time I bought the NY Times every Sunday, largely for the Book Reviews. As the price of the newspaper rose I found myself occasionally going to the library to look through that section of the paper. In my little town the Public Library is a part-time thing so you have to pick your spots.

We've used the library a bit at previous places we lived but absolutely love it since moving to Vegas. The Las Vegas - Clark County Library District is very good and I can't remember the last time I actually bought something to read outside of the occasional magazine to read on a plane. Coincidentally, I don't think I've turned on our game systems since we moved here a little over three years ago.

I used to spend several hours a week at the library, but since I bought a car and a home internet connection, I mostly just run in to grab books and go. That is, until very recently when I stopped doing even that.

I've been considering dropping my home internet and going back to my old routine of paying multiple weekly visits to the library, doing what I need on the net, then sitting in one of the comfy chairs and getting lost in a book until closing time. What can I say? I'm a very simple person- this is what I call fun" :)

@airtorn I had just about given up on video games until about a year and a half ago, when I decided to give myself something to distract from the harsh winters I experience in my neck of the woods . Now I'm trying to restore harmony in my life by allowing myself the pleasure without wasting my whole life away in front of my old CRT.

I cut the cable a few years back and went for the Roku + Amazon Prime/Netflix/Hulu.

I definitely felt like my wife was going to kill me and bury my body in the woods. Then the initial shock wore off and we were fine.

I'm not sure if I could pull off a cutting the internet and survive to tell the tale. But I do use the internet too much. I remember when I used to go a few days without checking my email. It was kind of a pain booting up my computer and waiting for everything to load. Now I just flip open my ipad or look at my phone. I enjoy the convenience factor 90% of the time. But the other 10% is my quiet, Thoreau self who would prefer to be sitting in the woods reading a book beside a quiet stream while the other 90% of me is watching Brooklyn 99 and eating Taco Bell.
