Don't think K-12 when you think education. That is one type of education, but not the only type! Nearly every large company has some type of training, human resources, or inservice department. This would be very important to that type of business worker. In health, you have a lot of education outlets, especially in dietary and human services. In any large city, you will find a community recreation department that offers adult education- good use of the degree here. Additionally, someone in a career field like myself might use this degree to secure a teaching position at a community college. Consider fields using workforce development as well. Gosh- I could go on and on!

That clears up a lot. I had no Idea about the flexibility of an M Education degree.

Depending on your type of education degree, you could go into curriculum development. There are also some types of counselors who have education degrees. There's actually an Audiologist in my town with an M.Ed. with a concentration in auditory learning. Neither of these are teaching, so they don't require teaching certification.

If you were interested in teaching, but didn't have certification, you could always try a private school. They aren't bound by state licensing requirements. In fact, in Virginia, private school teachers don't even have to have a degree in the subject they're teaching!

Nicholls State University www.nicholls.edu was mentioned in _Peterson's Guide to Distance Learning Programs_ (2003) as offering an online MEd Educational Technology. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any evidence of this on their website.

Northwestern State University www.nsula.edu offers the MA Adult Education and the MEd Educational Technology online. At $430.90/hr., the 33-hr. MA Adult Education program costs $14,219.70 and the 36-hr. MEd Educational Technology program costs $15,512.40. They are accredited by the Southern Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Southeastern Louisiana University's www.selu.edu School of Education website makes no specific mention of entire degrees being offered via distance learning; however, a visit to their online courses webpage does show a pretty fair array of online graduate courses in education on offer, particularly in the fields of educational leadership, educational technology, and special education. They do offer 36-hr. MEd Educational Leadership and MEd Special Education degrees, which, at $496.20/hr. cost a total of $17,863.20. They are accredited by the Southern Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Correction to the NSU Tuition and Fees

I am a proud Northwestern State University grad (Ed.S. in May of last year). I need to clarify:

Northwestern State University is one of the least expensive schools offering online degrees in the nation. The chart below from the Spring Registration Catalog (I hope that it prints correctly with aligned columns) shows that 20 semester hours are only $1795.80! And online-only students do not pay out-of-state tuition! That's said here: http://www.nsula.edu/ece/ensu.asp
Go to the bottom and there it is. I finished the entire 30-hour Ed.S. last year for around $4K to $5K, give or take.

Thanks, but I actually came across those. I was really looking for what courses the program offered. For example, UVA's EdS program requires 30 credits, and they specifically tell you the courses such as School Finance, Educational Law, Supervision of Instruction, etc. I like schools that are upfront about their programs. I've noticed that some seem to like to hide the program information and want you to request it by providing contact information. My wife and I did this once, and we kept getting phone calls from the school, even after we told them we weren't interested.

Could any current full-time employees give an estimate of how many hours a week one could expect to study for an online M.Ed? I am going to be teaching full-time next school year and was curious about your feedback...how many credit hours should I take a term?

    Thanks for your feedback.

Honestly, this depends on your program. When I was taking classes through UoP, I only took one class at a time. Because of their stupid learning teams (yeah, I'm a bit biased against them) I had to get only for about an hour or more every night to post messages and talk to my group mates. Per week I probably spend 20-25 hours.

When I was taking classes online through Virginia Tech, the courses were totally self paced, so I did most of the work on the weekends. I only took one course at a time, and it wasn't bad at all.

Walden, on the other hand, is a bit more structured. I'm taking two classes per 8 week session, mainly because I wanted to hurry up and finish. It honestly isn't that bad. I might spend about 20 hours a week between the two courses. That's from writing posts, watching the videos, reading, and completing assignments. It may seem like a lot, but it really isn't. And if you take one course, you should be fine. They actually make you take the first course alone, but then you can double up.

I've been teaching full-time for the entire time I've been enrolled in a program, and Phoenix has been the only program I've had trouble with. Of course, that was only because of the learning teams. If you do work on your own, it's a lot easier because you don't have to depend on others and wait for them to get back to you.

    Matt,

Thanks for the input. The program I am looking at is the M.Ed in Educational Technology through Northwestern State University. It is 36 graduate credits and looks to be very affordable.

I was just concerned about getting burned out while teaching math at the same time. I agree with your concern about U of P...the "project team" idea would drive me nuts.

Atlantic Union College www.auc.edu offers the MEd Administration, MEd Curriculum & Instruction, MEd Clinical Ministry, and the MEd General. Fitchburg State College www.fsc.edu is reported in Bears' Guide as offering master's degrees in elementary education and secondary education. While I was unable to find this on their website, it does seem that they do offer a fair array of online graduate classes in special education. They also offer an online Graduate Certificate in Instructional Technologies Proficiency. They are accredited by the New England Association.

Harvard University, through their Extension School www.extension.harvard.edu offers the ALM Educational Technologies. Most of the graduate courses at Harvard Extension School cost $1700 though a few cost more or less, so total tuition for this 10-course program should be about $17,000, give or take. They are accredited by the New England Association.

Lesley University www.lesley.edu offers the MEd Mathematics Education, MEd Science Education, MEd Technology in Education, and MS Ecological Teaching & Learning. At $465/hr., the 33-hr. They also offer a CAGS program. They are accredited by the New England Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

University of Massachusetts Boston www.umb.edu offers the MEd Instructional Design, MEd School Counseling, MEd Special Education/Orientation & Mobility, and the MEd Special Education/Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments. At $320/hr., the 36-hr. MEd Instructional Design costs $11,520, the 37-hr. MEd Special Education costs $11,840, and the 60-hr. MEd School Counseling costs $19,200. They are accredited by the New England Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

University of Massachusetts Lowell www.uml.edu offers the MEd Curriculum & Instruction, MEd Educational Administration, and the MEd Reading & Language. At $465/hr., these 30-hr. programs cost $13,950. They are accredited by the New England Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
