Before I get accused of suggesting that religious programs have lower standards, let me state that I am not suggesting any such thing.

Gleanings from the Liberty Grad/Seminary catalogue:

UA BA holders may conditionally be admitted into a master's degree program. So, the answer to the first question seems "yes."

No transfer of UA credits toward a master's degree. Entrance into LUs EdD or PhD in Counseling requires an accredited masters. Accreditation again is shown by the example of LU to have better utility.

The second point about the rigor of the LU religious programs is , obviously, of interest to me.

To do a 36 sem unit MA in Religious/Biblical studies at LU, one must obtain a 900 combo score on the V-Q portions of the GRE...not really high(mine was, I think, 450 Q and 630V in 1976....before senility set in). Also, before graduating from the MA in Religious Studies, one must show proficiency in Hebrew or Greek. Also one must know either French or German. Few master's programs require two languages. Also one must pass a comprehensive exam and one must write a thesis.

Another masters at LU is the Mdiv which is 90 sem units requiring both Hebrew and Greek. LU states as a goal that grads willhave , "... the ability to study the Bible in its original languages." A three year masters!!!

The ThM is another masters offered at LU. It is 30 units beyond the MDiv and requires 9 sem hrs in Grk and 9 more in Hebrew. A four year masrers !!!

The emphasis on the original languages in the MA, MDiv, and ThM programs prepares one to better enter RA USA doc programs in Biblical studies. This area oft is either ignored or treated lightly in some UA grad programs in Bible.

Entry into the DMin which is also 30 units past the MDiv at LU requires an accredited MDiv as prerequisite.

These data evidence , I think, the LU rigor in religious degrees. Nor did anyone in this thread suggest those degrees were lacking in rigor.

It's strange how opinions change in the light of fresh evidence.

This is why it is so important to challenge erroneous statements.

As I understand it Newport has a branch operation in South Africa which may have been accredited/approved by the SAQA. I have e-mailed Newport and asked them about this.

As I have discussed here previously, SAQA registration is not yet evidence of credible accreditation. We need to wait until HEQC (the accreditation agency) has its procedures worked out and functioning.

Newport did apply for SAQA registration a few years ago, but withdrew the application.
