While the D.Min. requires approximately 36 hours--as opposed to the Ph.D.'s 60 hours--the degree is not necessarily shorter in terms of the final product! Although variables exist, a common scenario for each degree is:

    Ph.D.

    120 hour undergrad
    32-60 hour masters
    60 hour doctorate
    212-240 total hours (dissertation included)

    D.Min.

    120 hour undergrad
    88-96 hour master of divinity
    36 hour doctorate
    244-252 total hours (dissertation included)

    North,

Although faced with myriad challenges, uncertainties and frustrations, you have stayed the course. Congratulations on a job well done!

    Muchas gracia mi amigo!

In answer to the second question, I will be dropping the Trinity program. I do not have the stamina for the continued pursuit of alphabet soup unlike you and Ric Walston :D

You are a better man than I.

Well done Dr. North. I recommend pleasure reading. I added a few long walks with my bride.

In the areas of Theological/Biblical studies in some USA RA evangelical schools ,as DTS or BBS, for the PhD (and as The Master's Seminary for the ThD) it is

    120 hour undergrad
120 hour ThM or equivalent (those with only Mdivs do extra)
    40 (approx) hour doc
    280 total hours

Even though be definition I have no interest in a theology degree, this thread made me curious enough to look around a bit.

My Heavens! Just looking at the web sites, the M.Div. must take the honors for being the single longest, most demanding Master's degree program in American education! Doing a doctorate, ANY doctorate, on top of that strikes me dumb with wonder.

    Talk about dedication!

Ooops! I wrote Dr. north instead of Dr. North. My many apologies. Congratulations to you, again. Thank you.

The Master of Architecture probably comes close to the MDiv in terms of course requirements: 72 post-BA credits over 3+ years.

On the other hand, the MArch can also be earned by completing a five-year BArch plus one additional year, or by completing a non-professional four-year bachelor's in architecture plus two additional years. (For some reason, architects insist on using the exact same degree designation for each of these programs.)

The most coursework-intensive master's degrees take longer than the shortest professional doctorates.

    BA + MDiv = 7+ years
    BA (non-arch.) + MArch = 7+ years
    BA + JD = 7 years
    PharmD = 6 years

Then again, the number of courses and the duration of the program do not always reflect the difficulty of the work or the non-course requirements (comprehensive exam, practicum, thesis proposal, thesis defense, etc.). While some schools award course credits for these kinds of activities, many do not.
