The "Free-Speech" movement started in Berkley. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Speech_Movement

Looks like it will die there too...

I'm guessing 5% Trump Supporters to 95% Liberal Progressive ratio of violence over the last 4 months.

Does anyone else really really enjoy watching the craziness of the edits on Wiki pages? Some of the most entertaining reading out there. Lots of crimsetop, Orwell would be proud.

Here's the most current edit to the above referenced wiki:

"On February 1st, 2017 Sproul Hall and Sproul Plaza were the site of the death of free speech on college campuses, as violent rioters, spurred on by irresponsible comments by Berkeley's chancellor, Nicholas Dirks, which gave tacit support to the use of violent "activism" to shut down the free speech of dissenting viewpoints on the UC campus, assaulted people, damaged buildings, and set fires to prevent Milo Yiannopoulos, a gay conservative speaker, from being able to speak on campus. This revealed the hypocrisy of the Berkeley campus community when they refer to "freedom of speech". While the campus is an active location for protests and marches, as well as the ordinary daily tables with free literature from anyone with a political orientation that is acceptable to the leftists in power at UC Berkeley. A narrow variety of groups of extremely limited political, religious and social persuasions set up tables at Sproul Plaza. The Sproul steps, now officially known as the "Mario Savio Steps", may be reserved by anyone for a speech or rally.[3] An on-campus restaurant commemorating the event, the Mario Savio Free Speech Movement Cafe, resides in a portion of the Moffitt Undergraduate Library."

I'll check back in a few days and update you on the neckbeard shenanigans.

The unidentified masked rioters are detrimental to sane Progressives, so much so that I suspect a false flag; won't be the first. (Again , my Ukrainian background kicks in: there is a widespread suspicion that ostensibly "far-right Ukrainian nationalist" group "Bratstvo" that likes to initiate violence at protests is a Kremlin front; it is headed by a talented writer and complete psychopath Dmytro Korchynsky who did give paid lectures at the Putinjugend camp at Seliger Lake. So the tactic is not unknown.)

There's a silver lining: the Right seem to put Milo Yiannopoulos the famous Twitter troll and hate peddler, out of all peeps, on the banner. Good choice guys, keep up the good work. Makes sense in the Age of the Pu$$y Grabber.

I was watching that on local TV last night (before I switched to the Warriors game). The local narrative seems to have been that Milo caused all the violence and brought this on himself because he's "controversial". (Your first "news" link continues to push that line in its title: "UC Berkeley cancels right-wing provocateur"). It's as if left-wing violence is a given, a law of nature, and anyone who disagrees must watch themselves so as not to trigger it. If they do, then all the blame for anything that ensues is on them.

It's reminiscent of Hitler's brownshirts silencing opponents with violence.

One of the things that was very striking was how the police were nowhere to be seen. There was no police response for hours, just occasional announcements by loudspeaker that what was happening was an illegal assembly along with orders to disperse (which were ignored). That inactivity was almost certainly ordered from the top.

    Right, good for him.

Somebody needs to say that if the left has free-speech rights, then so does the right. If the former's rights must be protected by law, then so must the latter's rights. The left should be free to protest Trump as long as the protests are legal, property isn't being destroyed and other people's rights aren't being infringed. As soon as protesters interfere with other people's rights, then the police need to step in hard. The police should have given just one 'illegal assembly' warning to disperse, then swept Sproul plaza.

Any university that isn't willing to agree to those conditions should lose federal funding. (Obama was quick enough to threaten "for-profits". This is a much more serious problem.) UC Berkeley lives on federal funding, ranging from student aid to research grants. The University of California would complain their heads off and their media enablers would get hysterical, but they would ultimately comply.

And the average American would cheer.

Leftist-violence is a given: Anyone who disagrees wth them triggers it & is blamed.

Heirophant, in an age of leftist fake news, your analysis is remarkably insightful and accurate.

    Let's agree on 2 things:
    1) Milo is not "controversial"; he is, in fact, a dick, with no other accomplishments to his name.
    2) It does not appear that he was harmed in any way, at the slightest. Even his ego is likely enhanced not diminished. Berkeley Republicans group (now we know there is one) got boost in publicity.

All the still-unknown small bunch of goons damaged is Berkeley grounds, and their own ostensible cause. In the ideal world, they'd be charged with appropriate misdemeanors and punished; alas, good provocateurs know how to throw feces with minimal risk to their person. Just ask Milo.

I personally agree that Yiannopoulos is a dick, but that's not the point. He is also genuinely controversial basically by definition, given that he is hated by many but also loved by many.

Undue weight. I do not think the MRA "community" is in any way mainstream. Yet. So how many people actually "love" him? Even Berkeley Republicons or whoever manipulates them likely just use him as a stick to poke their political adversaries.

OK, given that Trump has sizable following, I'll concede he's "controversial". Also, a dick.

Sad that Berkley a so called higher education institution and its minions are so anti "Free-Speech." Higher Ed is about conforming in the USA not thinking.

Berkley-affiliated student group invited the vile creature in the first place. Get your rants straight.

I do not care if he thinks the earth is flat. The facts are Berkley is NOT about free-speech unless its what THEY think.

Yet, Milo was invited by Berkley-affiliated organization, and the admins allowed the event; it is unclear what if anything the rioters were affiliated with. My money is on the false flag.
