How does one become a moderator/staff member?

    This may be a pointless thread but it is a genuine curiosity.

    I am on the forum randomly throughout the day and evening so I was curious what one needs to do to become a moderator? I do not think Steve, AsianStew, or ManiacCraniac can be direct messaged or I would have asked them. Lol

    You lose a bet, or at least that's what it feels like this week.

    You're right, I think there's a glitch that makes it not possible to PM mods (which is not very helpful, I realize) but I'm very, very easy to find online, including my email address.

    On a random day, I went straight to the admin/owner of the board and mentioned a few reasons I wanted to be moderator. A week later, I was granted access. At the time, there were only two active moderators and I noticed the other few no longer was on the board for at least a year or more. I decided to help out/try to contribute, and learn this system more, I am also a mod on the sister board and even more active there. If you emailed one of the mods, we would relay the info to Chip and a decision would be made...

    I've noticed there is /was a glitch in the setup. I tried to start a conversation with a mod - and I couldn't. I tried with Steve and I got the "you can't start a conversation with this person" response from the system. Someone else asked Maniac about this in the open forum - they'd had the same result trying to email him. IIRC he responded that yes - there was that problem - the system had been set that way since the last update and there appeared to be no way to change it.

    This was about 6 months ago. Has the system been changed? Can we now converse with Mods?

    Yes - by telepathy. They train for years before they're Ordained as Moderators. :) ...I feel a message in my brain now. ....It's Maniac...

    Sadly no, which is especially inconvenient because sometimes I wish I had that ability to privately tell people to knock off whatever disruptive thing they're doing, especially when doing so in the thread itself would clearly only contribute more disruption.

    Well, what I was thinking is that if mods can message people, maybe a thread where people can post a request to be contacted. Then a mod could reply to them that way. I dunno. I’m always thinking up workarounds.

    Actually, that does work. I messaged you in a "conversation" which is the same as a private message. Did you get it? It should show as a notification within the inbox on the upper right hand side (beside your alias and the alerts).

    That's weird because Kizmet sent me a private message back in mid 2019. Was the old version of the board still in place then? I don't remember when the change happened, but if it was on the old one that might explain it.

    Interestingly, now that AsianStew has messaged me, I have the option to Start a Conversation when I click on his name from a thread. But I do see how that is not an option on the other two “Staff Members”.
