Abner, I could make five, six or seven lists that size and not list all my favourites. And the list above has nothing to do with where they rank - John Lee is definitely WAY up there. I believe I mentioned somewhere that I'd had the privilege of meeting him around 1963. He's also the first guitarist I ever tried to imitate, back when I started learning to play. (Lightnin' Hopkins was the second.) I think John Lee's Vee-Jay "Traveling" album was the second record I ever bought - and before that, a friend's copy of it was the first blues album I listened to.

John Lee's guitar technique was extremely direct and basic - much more so than any other guitarist on my list. His spare, dramatic "roots" playing was extremely effective with his amazing - and unique - singing. He is termed by some the "most African" of blues singers and I think that's a fair statement, having listened to many African singers - and of course, American blues singers - over the years.

The list was just something that came quickly to mind - intended solely to see if I could make bullets work (and I did. ) Not intended as a slight to John Lee Hooker, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Carlos Santana, Phil Upchurch, Tal Farlow, Tchavolo Schmitt, Diz Disley or any other of the amazing guitarists, whose work has put me in awe for the past 60 years.

Here's a second, neater way to make list bullets:

    • John Lee Hooker
    • Lonnie Johnson
    • Eddie Lang
    • Teddy Bunn
    • James Spruill
    • Billy Butler
    • Pat Martino
    • Bola Sete
    • Django Reinhardt
    • Brownie McGhee

    They should stay put...
