Wow. With three seats still uncalled (!), the GOP has netted just one seat so far. President Trump won't find the House to be a rubber stamp for his ambitions.

I had thought the Democrats might have to hang on until the midterms to make their presence felt. I was wrong.

I believe the smallest House majority in its history.

Last session the House spent a few months just wrangling over who gets the speaker's gavel. Hopefully it won't be so bad this time but I suspect it will be worse overall?

I have to think they'll get squarely behind Johnson, who has ingratiated himself to Trump.

Don Corleone (to Bonasera): "And if by some chance an honest man like yourself made enemies they would become my enemies. And then, they would fear you."

I agree. That was what I meant by "overall". I suspect that they will be a less functional majority than they were in the last unfunctional majority session.

The Freedom Caucus is still alive and malfunctioning.

I can see why folks resist the idea that this election was a landslide, though. The House is the most representative, or least unrepresentative, branch of the government and it hasn't shifted much at all.

Yes, the house has shifted a seat or two in the Democrats favor. A big part of that though is that New York cleaned up some of the issues they had in some districts that had gone Republican in the 2022 election.

"A seat or two" is right. Democrats have 214 vs GOP 220 with one exceedingly close race in California still uncalled but very, very slightly leaning Democratic. A five vote majority. Yikes. 3 defectors and Johnson is hog tied.

Any guesses on whether Speaker Johnson keeps his job?

Keeps. Trump wants him. He wants Trump.

Besides, who else could the Republicans agree on? Again, a tiny handful of dissenters would kill his chances.

I didn't realize that the House Majority is even narrower than it was last time.

Given that the Senate map was awful for the Democrats this time, did Trump have any coat tails at all?

California house counts take a lot of time, what's going on there?
Anyway, last time I checked, GOP had 219, seats and maybe will pick 1 more?
So it means they have the majority, very small but still a majority for next 2 years.
Will be harder to pass bills but still possible?

Due to a couple of potential vacancies, the GOP majority might by down to just two!
