    Hello -

I am new to this forum. Found these conversations through Google search for online DBA and PHD programs. Having just finished my MBA from Cal Baptist University in Riverside California, I am interested in continuing on my education. My goal would be to gain a degree that would allow me to teach at the state or private university level in California.

Many of the threads for online programs appears a bit older. Guidance from folks who have been through this stage of their education quest would be very helpful.

    Thank you
    Cristen

    Hi Cristen,

Many of the threads are also not so old. But if you give more of a sense of your specific goals, desired pricing, etc., people could probably help you zero in on the best programs for you.

Thank you for your quick response. As a working professional and a mother of 2, I am in need of an online DBA or PHD program within business and a concentration of leadership or accounting. Diverse I know, but both are mutually interesting. Residency requirements are an interesting component to a program and would be something I would be interested in. Also, I would like for the program to be accredited as I would eventually like to teach business courses including accounting at the university level even online. I have reviewed the websites of most of the programs listed on this website that provide online programs such as Walden, Capella, etc.

Any guidance you would have would be very helpful.

Accounting and Leadership are two entirely different disciplines. Typically, when one cites a couple of these, it means that earning the degree is more important than doing the research and contributing to the field. I'd suggest settling on the field in which you choose to excel, then select the program that fits your eye and meets that objective.

Oh, and if your goal is to "teach," it would be a good idea to be more specific about what that means, for it can dramatically affect your choice of doctoral program. For example, if you hope to do a little adjunct teaching, a degree earned online from a nontraditional university might do the trick. But if you intend to enter academia, earning a traditional degree the traditional way from a traditional school is the way to go.

Do you have CPA? If not, and you want to teach, especially online, you should get it. Also, similar to what Rich said, if your goal is accounting, you can stop looking for concentrations in leadership.

Also, speaking of accounting, considering how much it costs to get a doctorate and how little it pays to teach, if that's your motivation it's almost certainly not going to bring you positive ROI, and that's without considering the opportunity cost of spending all your spare time on school for several years.
