The query finally occurred to me yesterday while walking down a Toronto street: why is it that men seem to outnumber women in this discussion group by a factor of easily 10 to 1? Is it because email discussion is a guy thing? Is it because distance education is a guy thing? Is it because computers are a guy thing? Is it because debate is a guy thing? Is it because collecting degrees and credentials as trophies is a guy thing? Your brilliant thoughts, please. Peter
Now there could be some truth to this thought on degrees as trophies. Consider the similarity: 1) John Boy: Hey, Bubba, look at tis here large mouth bass I just had mounted. Ain't she a beaut? Son, when she hit ma line I commenced to fightin with her, took mite near a air to git er in. 2) Dr. John Boy: I say Watson, look at my latest degree. A Ph.D. in countercultural revolution. Quite an addition to my collection, don't you think?
Bill Grover's theory is quite plausible. Additionally, there is the consideration that women need to get out of the house (thus pursuing degrees traditionally), while men need to get into the house (thus pursuing them nontraditionally). However, the simple truth is that degreeinfo.com is a secret recruiting tool for the homosexual movement. Also, by men pursuing their degrees at home, we can spend more time at the computer naked.
Kristian, it's a guy thing going back ti the stone-age when men dragged their trophies behind them with their club on their shoulders. Modern day, as in 100 years ago, came the olympics, another guy thing, that changed very quickly. Post war, 50s stay at home females, was seen as a mans trophy and status saying...woman your my trophy at home. The 60's, oh what a revolution, women started to bring out their own trophies, and for a while to scream that they are equal in trophy power. The Seventies/Eighties, quietly woman sat back, listening and accumulating their Medical degrees, MBA'S and top postions in the world from Scientist, Researcher, Professor, Chairman, CEO and Prime Minister to Presidents. Degrees/credentials by any other name..is a trophy..eh. So you see Kristian, we men are absolutely paraniod about the power of a woman, but I for one, acknowledge the ability, work ethic, smile and quality of the female professional. I trust this brightens Bloor street/Avenue Road on an Autumn day Cheers. John Roberts Ph.D (London ICST)
...and according to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Ed today, the largest demographic group pursuing distance learning is older women with children. Survey of one: I asked my wife, who did her Master's entirely by DL, and who teaches in one DL program (Buddhist studies) and one very short residency branch campus program (U of St. Francis) why she has never participated her. The brief answer was that she is much to busy doing it to have the time to read about others either doing it or planning to do it or writing about having done it.

Obviously our friend and hero Steve Levicoff doesn't work from home in Canada. Peter, typing in his gloves, parka, and scarlet woolies
Well, that's certainly a relief.........and here I was wondering why I can't seem to post to this board unless I'm wearing my cop-from-the-Village-People outfit.
Very interesting, that explains why lately my sexual fantasies have involved viewing female homosexual encounters?
Ah, this is an odd point of trivia, but . . . As I recall, the guy who did most of the lead singing as the cop in the Village People was the only straight member of the group.
I'll let you know when I'm up there for a course in a few weeks. I'm sure it will depend on the efficiency of the heat in my hotel. I was planning on buying a scarf at the college bookstore, however . . . Perhaps I'll start a new look (scarf and nothing else).
Reminds me of the hilarious Seinfield episode where George was accidently seen in the buff and he was very concerned because it was so cold at the time.
ARRrrghhhhh! Imminent wardrobe change.....better yet, could you just pick up an extra scarf while you're at the bookstore?
