I am at the career crossroads and I have to get this behind me, I am weighing a GED vs dumping $1000 on a real HSD and getting it behind me.

Obviously I want the real HSD.

I'm just wondering about it. I think Allied is going to be my top choice. Can anyone give me the deal on this? I want to transfer out the credits to a local adult school and just take the California exit exam so I have a more 'legit' sounding diploma, than something online. Even if that's not an option, a GED just sounds really mediocre to me. Although the time involved with getting a real HSD vs the GED might be a factor.

I'm prepared to just dump a chunk on the right DETC program and get a full on HSD.

Isn't it pretty cheap if you go the adult education center through a community college?

    I say forget the diploma.

Just get your GED and get cracking on an AA degree. Once you have a college-level credential, the diploma won't matter.

Furthermore, the prestige of the high school diploma (unless you attend an elite prep school) is very limited. Sure, having a diploma is better (slightly) than a GED if you have nothing else, but if you have a college-level credential, it makes no difference at all.

Above poster is right. The only exception is if you desire to enter the military with no college then the HS Diploma is required over the GED.

If your ultimate goal is to make it up to college, then I would say go with the cheapest and fastest option. Once you finish your Associates, nobody might bother about your high school.

Most community colleges deal with people who are home-schooled or do not have an official high school diploma. You might have an option to take at least some college credits as a "non-degree" student (for which they might not bother about your high school), and later transfer those credits into an Associate degree. Contact your local community college - they are your best bet!!!

The unfair reality is that a GED gives the impression that a person effed up in their life at some point. It won't matter after you have a degree, but the GED alone without a greater credential is looked down on a bit in many sectors.

Personally, I don't see a problem, but it's the rest of the world you have to worry about.

I'm not sure a HS completion program for adults gives any different impression.

I agree with Stefan. Someone might ask if you graduated high school. The answer is "yes." No one will care about the where, when, how.

Maybe for the Jocks, but as a Geek in high school. I believed that 4 years in high school were useless. Nobody has asked me about high school nor I listed it on my resume anymore.

I would recommend like most others'; get your GED, then move on with college degrees. Unless you don't intend to continue for higher education, then High School diploma is the way to go.

    Good luck with your decision.
