I think it IS different in Canada. In another lifetime, I went through (old-style) Teachers' college myself - and I have a High School teacher in the family (my elder son). I talk to him lots. Nope - it's not perfect - but considerably better than the "almost no pedagogy" you mention. Took my first psych. courses there - later ones were better, but only because 25 years had passed.

They didn't define API Economy on their page. I know what an API is (Application Programming Interface) so I looked up API Economy - and it's like Uber, that combines its own program with use of Google Maps. They provide a couple of other examples.

My take: We had "mashups" involving two web-applications 15+ years ago. Around 2006 TuneGlue was my favorite. I could get lost for hours exploring music, starting with an artist I knew and then going to all the nodes for others in more-or-less the same bag. And branching from there. Some across the world. Defunct app now. Sad. ...And I have a question (below).

Can someone (Mac, maybe) tell me the difference between mashups and APIs. Just the buzzword? Or.... do I have to take the course? Can't use the rudimentary keyboard on my phone to navigate these apps, so I really have no interest in it. Never order food, anyway. Particularly in these bad times. Never know who's cooked it. Think I'll skip it - good for others, maybe.

You're right that mashups have been around for years, and APIs much longer than that. As I understand it, the idea of "API economy" is taking those pieces and building a business plan around them. So the business, instead of building their own datasets to solve problems, links into existing APIs for their data needs, for a fee. When they've collected their own data from users using whatever they created, they turn around and expose that through an API to other businesses for a fee. So there's a symbosis.

It sounds like this course is more focused on the second half, producing software with an API that you can license.

 

Thanks, Dustin. clears that up. I've been hearing "API" for many years - but back when, it almost always meant the "Windows API" - the sacrificial altar a programmer burned his offerings of code on, so that Windows would (slowly and majestically) respond to it - or maybe give you a BSOD if your efforts failed a sniff test. For me, (Linux convert) those days are long over. Just not doing it any more. Nope.

Unfortunately you can't create an account without indicating what type of qualification you want to study, and you can't determine that without learning more about each one.

I see the domain is about 5 years old, but the "about" page lacks a lot of information like when they were founded, how many members they have, etc. Think I'll pass on that one.

Edit: Also, the blog hasn't been updated since January 2016 - less than a year after they were founded, and only contains 5 posts in total.
