I agree with both of your thoughts Bruce. IDK if it matters but the CJ programs concentration in Criminology entails quite a few psych type courses, Abnormal psych, victimology, social deviance.

Said B&M also offers an MA in counseling psych. If I stick with the CJ route would earning the MA, help with my application towards a psyd/phd program?

If your choice is btwn CJ and "Professional studies", I would definitely go with the former.

That said, there are a number of B&M school offering online bachelors in psych programs. Drexel University, Northeastern University and Penn State all come to mind.

Thanks japhy but if I go the traditional route with my GI Bill I will get a housing allowance each month(almost $2000 a month to go to school) So I plan on going the trad. route and cleping some.

It certainly can't hurt....the school I went to for forensic psychology (MSPP) is very competitive, and I was told that the deal-breaker for admission for me was the fact I already had a graduate degree.

However, if you go with the counseling psychology M.A., many Ph.D./Psy.D. programs will accept you with "advanced standing" (transfer credit), cutting down on the time it would take to earn the doctorate in psychology.

I did some research into MSPP after you or someone else suggested it earlier. And I feel the school has what Im looking for a PsyD with forensic concentration. Ive always been interested in the psyd over phd. And living in northern nj I could rather easily relocate up to boston it would hurt being in red sox territory but my IQ shouldn't drop that much, lol jkjk bruce Iam a yankee fan sorry.

If I earned the MA do you have any idea roughly how much time that would cut off the doctorate program?

I've also read numerous places that most doctorate programs receive "funding" which make earning doctorates "relatively" affordable. IDK if its thru scholarships or grants, I cant really phrase this question right Im sure someone will know what Im talking about.

    No one is perfect. :privateeye:

The M.A. program is 2 years full-time (3 years part-time), and will shave a year of the Psy.D. program. The main advantage of doing the M.A. first is that if you complete the Master's degree, you're eligible for the LMHC exam upon graduation, so even if you don't finish the Psy.D., you have a "consolation prize".

I'm not sure what kind of in-house stipends are available at MSPP, but I do know they have teaching assistants and employ students for staff positions (library, etc.) as much as possible. They will also allow you to take a paid position for your practicums and internships.

I have to put in a plug for the director of the Psy.D. Forensic program, Dr. Linda Daniels. She's a great teacher and great person who has a very compelling story about when she was the chief psychologist for the Port Authority of NY & NJ, and was in one of the twin towers on 9/11.

Thanks! Yeah, June this year. I didn't make an official announcement to brag because I didn't want to jinx myself going forward.

Now.....four more years to go (where's the vomit emoticon?).

Thought I'd give a minor update. I emailed Dr. Daniels about a week ago and asker her opinion on the BA in CJ issue. Her reply was that it would not be an impediment and there have been students who have been admitted with only a BA in CJ.

So my plan is now finish up the BA, make sure to include the pre-reqs for their Psyd program. And then I have to take the GRE(Something new to research I've never looked at anything to do with GRE)

Load-up on psychology electives as much as you can. Oh, and next time you correspond with Dr. D, tell her she never returned the book I lent her....hahaha.

Good luck with that....I did very well on the verbal, but tanked on the math section. I'd recommend a test prep course by someone like Kaplan, although I will say that MSPP is not stringent on GRE scores....they look at the entire package.
