I can see Italy happening, but I give a better shot to Holland and then possibly to France (I doubt they would leave the EU, but Le Pen would be the equivalent of Trump). If the EU keeps pushing immigration quotas, many of Eastern states (CR, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland) could leave en masse.
I don't think that article is implying that Italians/Italy wants to leave the EU as much as it is likening the recent populist wave of victories throughout the West to the current political situation in Italy. I agree that it would be nearly impossible for any of the PIGS to leave the EU at this point and to maintain and degree of financial solvency.
Well, it happened. Italy voted "no" in their referendum to alter their constitution and current sitting prime minister Renzi will be resigning. Could this be the first domino to fall in a movement out of the EU? https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2016/dec/04/italian-referendum-and-austrian-presidential-election-live
Next will be France http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/01/world/europe/president-francois-hollande-of-france-says-he-will-not-run-for-re-election.html?_r=0
The Austrians didn't go with the Eurosceptic presidential candidate, though, so it's not all bad news for EUtopians.
Per that earlier exchange we were having, what do you think the Euro's prospects are at this point? Is is time to put in the big short or do you think we're going to have to see a "Departugal" or "Czech Out" before we start to see some more movement?
A global movement toward nationalism? You bet! The global phenomenon of far-right nationalism is being fueled by existential terror
Well, predicting the future is a tough racket. But I will say that I only have about 100 Euros, and that only for when I'm passing through the French islands on my way around the Caribbean.
I wonder what specifically makes these current trends "far-right" as opposed to simply being classified as "right"? Perhaps much of Europe, particularly Western Europe, has moved so far left that these movements are classified in a more extreme manner than is warranted. ...or having "far-right" in the title leads to more clicks!
Exactly the last thing, I expect. I mean, just tell me the facts and I'll decide for myself if I think they're far right, centre-right, or what have you.
Wait. There are instances when media sources with political leaning biases will tell us JUST the 'facts"? Where are these wonderful sources and why don't I know about them??!! :silly:
I think sometimes there are media news sources who give just the facts. However, they do not always give all the facts. As we know, a lie of omission is just as serious as a lie of commission.
I agree and it can also be important to remember that in many parts of the world, so much of the news is State-run news. When those with political power have the power to decide what news should go out...well...I'm pretty sure that all the facts definitely aren't getting out!
